That’s the first thing on my agenda when I retire someday. I used to love it but just got busy. Will get my boat out again too but the motor will need a good carb rebuild. I will also be asking for advice on a new bow then. The old one is a PSE Fireflight.
2nd weekend of bow season and they aren't moving in this hot windy weather...I know this because I haven't seen any nor have I heard any rifle shots...

Thank goodness no cell phone service at my Farm so here is pic from this morn. First hunt of season. I’ve taken 5 good deer from this stand. Sits just west side of sanctuary 100 yds from clover plot and Random Cluster # 2& 3. Wind was out of SW but I knew it would roll off the ridge and come down from north into my face. Five deer and no shots. Huge Coopers Hawk checked me out on a limb 20 feet away. Watched him nail a squirrel at 40 yds last year before the squirrel could blink. Acorns were raining down and squirrels busy cutting. Awesome sit.

Ha, quite a coincidence with the hawks today. I had this one swoop in from behind me and must have realized I was not a meal at the last second. Just breaking light here on the mountain...a few acorns dropping. 50 degrees, slight SE wind.

2 hours later and absolutely no deer movement warming up quickly, very light breeze, acorns steadily dropping but I am in a huge forest of dropping oaks...
2 does and a yearling just trotted by to my south and down the mountain they went...

Just got in the tree. We have a storm front moving in that should be here at sunset. Hoping it will push the deer. Sitting on a scrape line in an old skidder trail.

3rd sit of the season. In a place I call Turkey Creek. It's a white oak drainage running through a old pine plantation with some young pines to the south. Had a great encounter with 2 shooters yesterday at another stand about the time I was packing up early to get out of the downpour thanks to Hurricane Nate. Didn't feel right taking the shot with it pouring down rain. There's a nice 4 year old 8pt that is still in velvet cruising through at dark. Maybe I'll get a shot. I've never killed a deer in velvet. It's 85 degrees and believe me I have the "vapor maker" going with its 33pt buck scent. Plus walking in to the stand in your underwear is always fun. Can't beat early season bow hunting in the south
Post Hunt Update: Had 2 does and 3 fawns come through early. Not taking any does the past 2 years have paid off big time. Nothing but some squirrels until sundown. Had a group of hens fly up right above me (thus the name Turkey Creek). Even though I recognise the sound it still makes my heart jump every time. Fast forward to dark. With all of the trees still holding their leaves it gets dark down in the woods about 10-15 minutes early. Heard what I thought was some deer coming in about the time I didn't feel comfortable to shoot. Sure enough it was a yearling and the 8pt still in velvet. After a few cuss words I settled in knowing I wouldn't try to climb down until they moved on. A flash of white caught my eye about 10 yards below me. There stood a heck of a deer. Didn't recognise him but he was one of those deer that you just knew was a shooter. I already had my bow in my hand (I always have it ready the last 30 minutes). Got my bow up, came to full draw.....nothing, couldn't see a thing except my top pin. Stayed at full draw and finally my eyes adjusted enough to be able to see his rack. Followed it down his neck and back then dropped my bow what I thought was enough. Touch the trigger and the arrow was on its way. No whack or anything. 100% clean miss. Absolutely sickening. Had to listen to him blow at me in triumph. This by far has been my best worst season to date. I've had 4 shooters within bow range in 3 sits. I'm not complaining. Getting rid of all my members have been THE best thing I've done. You can tell the deer are more relaxed. Oh well. I'm off tomorrow. I've got another property that needs some does shot. I need to put an arrow in something to get my nerves under control.

The weekend was a bust for me. No deer whatsoever seen on Saturday but the wind was really swirling and it was stupid hot. 74 at 5 am on Saturday and it climbed to mid 80's quickly. Sunday morning was cooler but it heated up fast. 3 does seen at 10 am and that was that. The other lease member that was at the lease with me saw 2 does Sunday morning...tough hunting with the moon, wind, heat, and huge acorn crop...

Woke up to heavy rain Saturday morning. Sat in the ground blind. Was hoping that there would be some movement after the rain stopped but didn't see a thing. Same with Saturday evening hunt just no rain. Sunday was a bust as well but the weather and winds were perfect. That's why that call it hunting

Sitting on another property tonight. The owners last name is Norris so naturally I call this place Chuck Norris. I name all of stands after Chuck Norris movies. This one is Delta Force. This is my second year to hunt this place. I was fortunate enough to get this piece (180 acres) by knocking on his door one afternoon looking for places to get permission for the "Hunt for Heroes" to turkey hunt. It has worked out great. He likes deer meat and needed someone to keep the place up. I could do both. The biologist said that I need to take some does off the place to get the deer within carrying capacity of the land. Considering I'm surrounded by young pines I don't know if I'll ever win that battle. Either way. I'm looking to stick something tonight to calm my nerves. It 85°F and humid. The humidity is suppose to start dropping this evening as a weak cold front pushes through. Got my vapor maker with me so all should be well. Update to follow

Not exactly live, but this morning I hunted from a new gun blind on my home place. My son has bowhunted here for years, and I had a nice blind that wasn't being used so I set it up for pig devilment
I had three groups of pigs in there this morning, some just before good daylight, another group that ran across the plot at the very end, and this one and five of his siblings came in to eat free corn. I think I skipped an arrow off this ones back about three weeks ago !

Well guys, I had some good luck and I had some bad. Hogs were on me right after daylight, and all I have to show for it is a bloody arrow. I don't know for sure where I hit her, but the blood looked good. I saw where she went and didn't pick up blood for 75 yards or so. Once found, I followed blood for about another 75 yards until it petered out. I guess the yotes will eat well !
