Live from the Stand 2018

Sitting a road full of oaks that borders a creek. Walked the half a mile from the cabin to the stand to discover I left my cushion on the porch. Gonna have a sore behind after this one.

We're back at it. Have to give it to him for wanting to go hunting rather than a pumpkin chunking contest. There's been a good 2 year old coming in over here. Hopefully he'll get a chance at him.

My buddy shot a good one this afternoon. I held out until as late as I could on a big ole doe with the bow. No bucks showed so I went ahead and added her to the freezer. Bow hunting during ML season normally burns me but I continue to do it...worked out ok tonight

We cleaned the roads last night and are doing a morning hunt before setting the two stands we brought.

Pine sap I’m so happy for you. My 3 yr old grandson told me before he went to bed the night before I left for here “when I get older I’m coming to the Deer Camp and hunting with you”.

Warms my heart.

Post hunting update. Everything played out as scripted all the way down to us seeing our first deer as guessed at 5:45pm. The buck we were after showed up moments later. Looking back now I set my son up for failure. Limited mobility in the stand resulted in a narrow shooting lane. Between the does pushing him around we could never get settled on him to take a shot. I gave Collin the greenlight to shoot a doe but his heart is set on a buck being his first deer. I filmed the exchange for 15 minutes. A couple times when the buck would feed off into the woods I had him settle down and breath. He was shaking so bad. My heart hurt for him. I wanted to take all of his nerves and feelings for him. But I know this is the beginning of a wonderful journey that I hope he takes with him into this world. We're heading back out this afternoon. Hopefully we can get another chance. I did learn that the pressure of killing deer is created by ourselves. He was just enjoying the day and I was loving the memories.

I passed a really good 10 point buck yesterday evening. I am looking for something either really special or the big old “bully buck”that has been using our place these last 3 years. Slept in this morning and it is a perfect day. I have to take my cape and rack to the taxidermist today and I wanted to be well rested for work tomorrow because I am going to have to put in some long hours the next 3 days before my next mini 5 day vacation...fall is here - good luck everyone!

Well this weekend we got no deer. Our last chance for Archery. But with all the noise from clearing roads and setting stands it doesn’t surprise me.

Pulled the cards at two spots. One site was full of does. The other also had more Does than before and this boy showed again

Now just hope he shows now that I’ve set the new Tripod stand in daylight.

View attachment 13928 I’m participating this morning ! Pretty foggy but it’s burning off. This is one of my best stands for a cruising “surprise “ buck. Food plot is wheat, AWP, and crimson clover.
That twisted barrel would have me distracted all day just looking at how cool that thing is. What caliber is that lead slinger?

I’m old school Pine, it’s a .280 Rem. This is the one custom rifle I’ve allowed myself and the last deer rifle I’ll ever buy. Trued Remington action, Timney trigger, Bartlein barrel, HS Precision stock. Built by Alamo Precision Rifles in Hurst, TX.
With R19 powder and a 140 grain Sierra Game King it hasn’t failed me yet. Only had it for three years but several deer, hogs, and a few coyotes have bit the dust.......

Just had a chance to take a nice doe and muffed it. She wasn’t in the food plot, but in a lane to my left. She and three others walked across the lane and fed on acorns for five minutes or so but limbs kept me from having an open shot on all but the smallest doe and a yearling. Since I’m meat hunting, I want all I can get.:)

Live/Post from the stand 2018!!!!

Decided to go hunting this afternoon to clear my head a bit. My oldest had just gotten off the bus and was playing in the yard with his brother and sister. He didn't hesitate when I asked if he wanted to go. Sat in one of my bow blinds over a good looking plot of oats, wheat, clover and some brassica. Once again we took bets on when the deer would show. Collin said 4:55pm, I said 5:10pm. Well he won. First deer showed up at 4:53pm, a doe and a fawn. He had his heart set on a buck but did mentioned he would shoot a doe if there was one without a fawn. The two in front of us fed as close as 20 yards, making some tough moments and a great learning experience about deer. She started acting nervous and walked across the plot stomping. Thinking she seen a coyote or something we just watched. She ended up leaving the plot leaving her fawn. A few minutes later she came back in a hurry and began to feed. Not a minute later 4 does and 3 fawns came in too. Having 9 deer all within 30 yards was awesome. Collin did amazing. Only moving when he was suppose to. Finally the oldest of the group showed her dominance and began to run the others around. Collin picked her. He got up on his shooting rest and waited patiently until the shot presented itself. Mind you I'm filming the entire thing while making sure he was good. She finally gave him the right shot and he took it. The shot looked good and she jumped into the woods. Collin thought he missed because it looked like a Chinese fire drill with deer running everywhere. We waited 20 minutes, meanwhile I watched the footage over confirming a good hit.

Well after a lot of hugs and high-fives we got out and went and looked. Right away we found hair and stomach content. I told Collin that we needed to back out and come back in a couple hours. When we got home I watched the video again and confirmed he hit back. From the look of he hit the stomach liver area. Feeling good about the shot we went back with Piper and Oberon for help. Let me tell you this. Those dogs don't play. Hardly a drop of blood but that didn't stop them. They went right to her. She was 50 yards from the shot sight. I'm beyond happy for him.

Oh and to top it off. On the way back to the house a button buck decides to run under my tire of my truck less than 65 yards from the house. So needless to say we have a little meat to process this evening.

Well, cell service is intermittent down here along the river so we'll see how this works out. After MORE heavy rain over the last couple of days the river is high and there is lots of standing water but the sun is coming up on this beautiful morning!

So the morning started extremely slow. No deer sightings until 10:00 when a basket racked 8 came sloshing through chasing a doe. They circled a couple times and then were hanging out about 40 yards away when a little spike came in to check her out. A few minutes later a really nice buck came through but unfortunately he stayed about 50 yards out. I could tell he was big but I never had any clear openings to see him well. He looked like an 8 though. Both he and the smaller buck started posing and I thought they were gonna square off but the spike saw his opportunity and went after the doe. Big boy wasnt having any of that and set off after him. The smaller 8 just slowly walked off alongside the river. A little bit later some does and fawns came feeding through on some Japanese honeysuckle and headed off along the creek.

If I can figure out how to post video I will. They were sloshing around in the standing water making all kinds of racket.

Here's the spike coming through on the original track, about 20 yards out.

Live from the stand 2018:

It has been storming all day with it finally breaking. While getting ready the sun even popped out. Unfortunately on the way to the stand a slight drizzle has set in and it is muggy. Nothing says deer hunting like sweating and swatting bugs in November here in the deep South. Looking to get an arrow bloody on my new bow setup.
