Live from the Stand 2018

So we had 6 does pass between us this evening. We could both see them at the same time, from different stands overlooking the same bottom, which made for a cool story. My buddy also saw 2 additional does along the edge of the pasture. It's not a doe day here in VA so we just watched them do there thing for a good hour. This is the second time I've sat this stand and had 6 deer come in within shooting range and hang out for an extended period of time. Seems like it will be a permanent stand location.

Big bucks are mostly locked down. The last couple mornings, one of our target buckshas been working hard to keep a doe in a thicket. This morning, he chased her into the far corner of our plot. As she stopped to, he walked over to a licking branch that’s high enough he had to rear up on his hind legs. As he came down and held still for the first time in 3 days, I squeezed off a shot from 342yds. He kicked and bounded into the woods out of sight. The 140g Accubond at 3200fps from a 270WSM did its magic. We easily followed the trail for 30yds where he was piled up. He’s a good buck for this country (he was our number 5 buck) and has mass and width.

A few minutes before end of shooting light I heard a shot come from our house...or at least I hoped it was and not a trespasser. A couple minutes later I get a text telling me she shot a buck. I got home hoping he had not run into the very deep hollow behind our house and was happy to find him 20 yards from where she hit him with her .243. Tell your wife congrats! I wish I could still hunt from my back door too. Maybe one day again.
 
Wind change forced a location change. High in a tree on our deer lease. Just after good light I did a few light grunts and almost immediately heard footsteps in the leaves coming my way...it was a lone doe, tail at half mast and she was peeing every 20 yards and lightly foraging...Buck Magnet!!!
No bucks took the bait though...pretty sad...
 
And just now this young 10 point walks by going the opposite direction...

That is a great deer Elk Addict. I'm excited for you and for all NY property owners. Tom (Elk Addict) has killed his # 5 buck and it is a great deer( imagine what his #1 deer looks like);other NY properties in similar normal "small deer areas" are experiencing similar results. If it can be done on Tom's property and mine and others who are doing it but have not posted their reports yet, it can be done on many more NY properties. NY deer hunting does not have to be spikes and fork horns; it CAN be great. Congratulations Tom on a great deer harvest.
 
Thanks Dave, as I’ve noted before, it’s the generosity of folks on this site (and its predecessor) for sharing knowledge that made our success possible. When we bought the property in 2013, we’d go days between deer sights. Our evening sits in one of our plot complexles has averaged 25-35 deer the last 4 days and that’s with big bucks still having does locked down (with high winds and snow). While the plots have been a huge draw, I’m convinced the extensive hinge cuts have been most important providing tons of browse and and cover. In addition, our habitat work has also increased other wildlife which I really enjoy. If I can pull this off on weekends living 3 hours away, anyone can do it.

I do love my 270 wsm. Great shot for you and great buck. Our snows come and go quick this time of year and I'm glad. Congrats.
 
Congrats to you Elkaddict. A true testament to your hard work in improving your habitat. I’m trying to follow in the footsteps of both you and Chainsaw. For this year I’ve only seen evidence of 2 yr olds. I’ve been in contact with neighboring land owners. One of three is on board. One is old school, and from what I gather, simply wants to fill his tags, the other one hasn’t replied to my communication.

My food plots continue to increase, and I have identified and opened up several apple trees. My next project of doing a heavy cut on a swampy hardwood area, to include substantial hinge cutting, will hopefully add to my attractiveness to the big brown creatures. Thanks again to all who,have contributed, and especially congrats to you Elk.

Dogghr, it’s quickly supplanting my 300wby and 7stw as my favorite deer caliber. It’s the right combination of flat trajectory and low enough recoil that I can watch the impact. Because the wind is always blowing here, the velocity and BC of the 140s does a great job. The hole through the lungs was fist sized. I was surprised he actually made it 30yds.
 
I need to have someone cut my shirt tail off from yesterday morning...I was hunting our deer lease and just a few minutes before 10 I saw a spike come down the hill about 80 yards through the woods and I paid him no mind...I was looking around and I kept hearing the deer walking but now it sounded like 2 so I looked back over and the buck I was after was trailing him about 60 yards behind and he had just gotten downwind of me and was looking nervous. I mouth grunted and stopped him but his vitals were all covered by a tree and he was 90 yards. I have no rest in this stand and he was at the last opening I would be able to shoot through. I took aim for his neck off hand and with adrenaline kicking and no rest I knew it was gonna be iffy. At the shot he ran back the way he came and stopped behind a blowdown nd blew and then he took off again...his trail had no hair, blood, or anything and what I was trying to hit would have put him down in his tracks..

What are the odds of him showing back up? I have only killed 2 deer with a rifle I missed before but I missed both with a bow and it was 2-3 weeks later before I got them from the same stand...

If it was deer down here you wouldn't have to worry about a second shot. They don't stop running until they hear turkeys gobbling in the spring. I swear the deer the Wounded Warrior missed last year hasn't stopped running.

And to add fuel to the flames I am in the same stand I saw 18 deer from yesterday morning and I have seen none but my wife texted me and told me the buck I have been after at home is in our backyard tending a doe...
