Live from the Stand 2018

Back on stand. Went in at 11:00 for a quick bite and to dry my clothes and boots and a quick nap. Looked out the back window at the deer parade with a little buck chasing so got dressed and headed back out. I have seen 4 deer in the past 15 minutes and 2 were bucks...

We're back at it again this morning after an unsuccessful hunt (other than the coyote shot). Decided to give his stand a break. We're looking for meat to appease an elderly gentleman who's place we take care of and are able to hunt. It's warmed back up. 65°F, we need it to cool off again.

Smallest spike I've ever seen. Collin wants to wait. We still have 30 minutes

Yesterday evening my wife was watching a wide buck chasing in our backyard. She has been having a lot of health issues but loves to hunt. I told her if she sees him again and he is what she is looking for to shoot it...

Well this evening I am sitting in the middle of our property and I ended up seeing 5 bucks and 6 does but no shooters. A few minutes before end of shooting light I heard a shot come from our house...or at least I hoped it was and not a trespasser. A couple minutes later I get a text telling me she shot a buck. I got home hoping he had not run into the very deep hollow behind our house and was happy to find him 20 yards from where she hit him with her .243. She took out his heart...sorry for poor cell phone photo...

Kinda last day to bowhunt. Next 2 wks rifle and doe seasons and ML so bow doesn’t have much chance. Been a fun few wks but nothing to make me draw except for the one doe taken w recurve.
Walked the steep climb to the Bear stand to watch the sunrise this Sunday morn. Great time. Again no shots taken.

Inside spread rule is not a very good measure. My buck this year had a 14” inside spread and scores mid 150’s...

I know some places you have to have 16” inside to be legal...

You are absolutely right Okie. Inside spreads and and additionally number of points are not good measures. The absolute best rule is age as determined by body structure and to some extent the diameter measurement at the base of the antler as compared to the eye diameter. However newer hunters just don't see the differences in body shape or antler base diameter as those that study it like we all do. The inside measurement and the number of points are more easily recognizable. It is not a great measurement but for new guys and "normal" hunters it is better than no measurement and it works maybe 80% of the time.

Back on stand. Walked 1/2 way back into our property along the raked trails. I even raked directly to my tree for silent walking. Absolutely still windless morning and just as I reached the ladder stand in a big white oak I could hear deer walking in the leaves just a few yards away so I just stopped behind the white oak trunk and stood there until dim light showed a doe and fawn foraging. I stayed standing there until they finally wondered off at 7 am and then I quickly climbed into my stand. Raked trails work!

A different doe and fawn passing by now...

Personally I find my bow hunting gets better the further into gun season. It seems the deer are seeking solitude and some of the thickest cover they can find. A lot of my now setups are exactly around that. I know I get a lot of strange looks for always carrying my bow to a stand but it's what I prefer

Brought a buddy hunting today. We had 0 sightings this morning but I did hear one cross the river. It made all kinds of noise going into and coming up out of the banks, not to mention the splashing and sploshing while it swam across. Here is the evening set up. My buddy is on the other side of this same bottom.

Got a slightly SW wind which only gives me 1 option for hunting here and it is not ideal. Have to hunt east end of S plot. The issue I have is my stand is visible from the entire plot and 2 does are in it now...
