2020 Live from the Stand

What a crazy hunt I had...I sat a new stand 75 yards from my favorite stand in the woods that is right off the main trail. From this stand I could actually see to the rim of a deep hollow inside our property. I saw bucks moving around that rim edge I would have never seen from the other stand. All in all I saw 6 bucks and no does this evening. 2 were very good 8 point bucks but not the target deer...will be great next fall, 1 was slightly smaller but was a 9 point, a 7 point, 6 point, and a spike. I had shot opps at every deer...

Perhaps a morning hunt will be gotten in but we have big shots of rain the next 2 days...

It’s raining here now Okie, has been since daylight. That’s ok, I need pond water in a big way !

I couldn’t hunt right now anyway, babysitting Sarge for the next few days. Funny thing is, looks like a NW wind for the rest of the week while I’m sitting at the house......:(

Y’all keep posting though, that’s the best entertainment I could find !

It was one of those mornings...I checked the weather and it showed no shots of rain till 9am so I thought I could get a quick hunt in before the rain hit. The wind was blowing pretty decently from the east and I had a full over ear gator/muffler thing on to combat the wind so I left the house at 5:30 am...I have to cross the county road that runs through our property to get into our land over there that is our main hunting area so I went through the gate and looked over to my left and I could see something shining in the filtered moonlight so I walked over to it. It was a piece of lumber, 1x2 oak I guess someone lost out of their truck so I picked it up and was going to put it inside our gate when I saw headlights coming up the road while I was still standing in it. I went into our gate hole and stood to let them pass but they stopped, I couldn’t see in the truck but it was a late 90’s Chevy pulling a 4 wheeler and the passenger asked me if I had any luck...I took it as assuming I had hunted in the moonlight and was actually going home before daylight. I said “I haven’t even been yet”...they laughed a bit and I turned to put the lumber inside my gate and they drove on up the road and turned in past my closest neighbors house and went down the road that has all of the 10 acre parcels along our east fence. I went ahead and crossed the road and made my way to my stand with easy walking in the moonlight even though it was partly cloudy. As soon as I got to my stand which was the same one I was in yesterday evening it started to sprinkle. I did not have any rain gear on but I went ahead and climbed up. Legal shooting light for my area was 6:43 today and I heard the first rifle shot across the fence at 6:04 am :( ...it then began to rain...the 2nd smaller caliber rifle shot went off at 7:05 across the fence and the 3rd one which was higher powered went off at 7:25 am. I was 150 yards from the fence and from what I have seen of their setup they were 60 yards the other side of the fence. I sat in the steady rain until I was soaked through at 8:30 and I got down and came home to dry myself and all of my gear out...I saw no deer...

I guess I will watch the weather and if able will try again this evening. Will check trail cams tomorrow and see who didn’t come to dinner tonight...

Back at it...went this morning and saw 2 nice young bucks and 9 does...

With 10 days still to go with rifle, I’m in no hurry to punch my tag so I passed this guy and a small 8pt tonight. My son would be thrilled to tag this guy with a muzzloader. The bright moon has really impacted daytime movement. Haven’t seen 5 of our target bucks during daylight since mid November although the cams indicate they’re still around. I’m hoping the nor’easter that comes in Saturday will get them on their feet tomorrow night.

Had probably my best hunt of the year tonight. It was only the second time the real haybale blind has been sat this year. Last time Dawna shot her doe. I saw 10 does and fawns, and 8 different bucks, including a new fella that would have gotten an arrow if he’d come 15 yards closer. A few pics from the night:

And finally, the ONLY buck that didn’t come in range...

Pea soup frozen foggy, bad wind direction, and a neighbor on my west has been using a backhoe and chainsaw since well before daylight...6 point buck ran by 5 minutes ago in a hurry!

Well, boys......first sit of the year. 9 out of 10 times I have a doe on the ground in the first hour of my hunt, but that was not the case today. Sat until 10 am and saw 2 spikes and 3 jakes. Great morning to sit after a cold front blew through yesterday and good hunt to tune up my routine.....should have something on the tailgate tomorrow.
