2020 Live from the Stand

Torrential rains this morning. The girls decided to sit this one out. I'm too stubborn for that. Saw two does about 300 yards out when there was a break in the rain. Currently downpouring.

Our general season doesn’t open until November 7, but as the wind was right and I was bored, I sat my home rifle blind last night in hopes of seeing a coyote or some hogs. I got to see two does and later a funky antlered 3 year old at my feeder. He had a big fork on his left side with what looked like his brow tine in between them. Right side had three normal points and a stub. It didn’t look broken off, just not developed.

At dark as I was putting my binos away I saw several black shapes way down in the bottom of this food plot. I picked up my 6.8 SPC and saw 10/12 hogs. For the record, at last light, black crosshairs are dang near impossible to see on black hogs. I could see the edges of them, but not the center. So......I picked out a group of three together and squeezed the trigger. The resulting squeal told me that I hit at least one. Maybe that will discourage them for awhile.

Edit: My son found him this afternoon fifty yards from where I shot him 2A9F841A-4EE2-4A6A-95D7-F78610379A67.jpeg EBCE2684-8A77-4C8E-B9FC-110647F90E1A.jpeg

I thought I was gonna get lucky on an old mama doe, but just couldn't quite get a shot. 2 does and 2 fawns came in from my left which is not the usual travel route, turned East and walked right up my access trail and are now eating in the cottage yard area about 50 yards away. I can see them between me and the cottage as I type. Maybe they'll swing back by before dark!

You’re a better man than me Okie, but.....send us some of that rain. o_O
I wish I could! It is our muzzleloader season right now and it’s not supposed to stop raining till Friday. 30’s and raining all day every day. On Friday it warms up but wind switches to south which is bad for here :(

I jumped a stud walking in a bit ago...not cool...

I passed a couple management bucks tonight (a 41/2 year old 6pt and 31/2 year old 5pt). Last day of bow season (11/20) these two and a couple other management bucks are in trouble. Great sit:). We have serious weather coming in late tomorrow night. I’m hoping they’re moving tomorrow evening....

I'm back at it today and unfortunately it's warm and muggy, but I have a favorable wind out of the SW. Who would have thought I'd still need a thermacell at the end of Oct? I'm sitting in the "paw paw stand" this morning and I heard something big cross the river at first light, just a little down stream of me. Then I had my first duck sighting not long after... a mallard just swimming along with the current.

I have to admit though, I can't wait for Sat morning. A cold front is coming through just in time for our early muzzleloader opener.

Nothing seen this morning so i came down to get lunch and sight in the muzzleloader. I just got settled in the pasture stand about 30 minutes ago and this little guy came in less than 10 minutes later. I was extremely tempted cause i haven't shot a deer with the bow in a few years, but he ended up getting a pass and I was able to get these couple pics as he walked away. Maybe next year.

First hunt of season. Hurricane whatever dumped buckets of rain this wk. Ciold front brought wind and 30 deg drop. Shoulder/back/rib still screwed up so no way even string the recurve for first time in 5 years. Using compound dropped back to a wimpy 50# from its normal 65. Frustrating. Would never hunt this stand this time of year but protected from wind a typically good late season but was getting pics of 3 shooter 10s. . Field is rye , clover , brassica. Deer on acorns and didn’t bother w me as I suspected. Skunked. Rut looking be 2 wks out yet. Late.

South wind even though light really messes up our hunting on our place at Whitetail Hollow and instead of pushing deer to my many neighbors by attempting it I chose to come over to our other property which is right around 30 acres about 45 minutes from home where a south wind is preferred. I had a large doe standing in the drive when I drove in so took it as a good sign.

I guess the same doe slipped past me in the moonlight and also saw a raccoon in the moonlight. Looks like a great spot right?

Just as the night started giving up its hold and the gray light of dawn was coming on I heard it...an excavator started up over on my East neighbors and came right toward my location while I was listening to the tracks and it was pulling and breaking trees as it came. My location is about 100 yards from fence through those woods in the photo and it came down the fence row and then veered back further into their property and is clearing timber. I was talking to a guy who works for the county and he told me they were going to be working on my neighbors place digging topsoil and then clay gravel out for the county to use and building my neighbor a pond in return. It looks like the haul road will be along our fence...can’t control it so just live with it...

On a good note...tomorrow, final day of muzzleloader is a north wind!

Just a little more to the story, my father and I went to our go to rut stands this morning. Right where two ridges meet, and quite a ways back from our nearest food plot. We do have a little .3 of an acre plot cut out in the timber nearby but I haven’t planted it in years.

The deer seem to head up to and down from the corner of where the two ridges meet. But with no major landmarks to funnel the deer it’s a crap shoot of them passing in range or not. I’ve bounced my climber around this area a lot over the years and it always seemed like I was being reactive to the buck that just passed instead of waiting for the next deer.

Both buck we heard this morning came down the mountain from the corner and split my father and I, we were 200 yards apart. The buck he shot just so happened to hit the logging road and walk right up it presenting a 30 yard shot.

it’s very tough to see because of the shadow on the map but the blue area is where we hunted and you can the ridge coming up the mountain at a curve. And the ridge runs left to right just above the blue marked area.

You can also see our up property boundaries fairly well since it was logged. And you can also see our 5 acre destination plot of to the right. 6351B2F7-911F-42CD-826F-62F82EE6BA26.jpeg

Hunting the nosebleed stand yesterday morn. High ridge between 2 saddles sitting on an oak flat. Acorns poor this year after bumper in 2019. Temps n 20s. Wind N almost still. Always enjoy the sunrise over the mountain from this stand looking south. Saw deer from start for 2 hours. Couple non shooter bucks. Big boys should start moving late wk as full moon wanes. Had to leave to go pack boxes!!! Who sells their house in middle of bow season??
