2020 Live from the Stand

I didn’t go out this morning because the weather channel showed heavy rain until around 3 pm and when I awoke around 6 it was raining but it ended by 7 am and the temp dropped 30 degrees from what it was yesterday morning. About 8:30 I was in the kitchen fixing breakfast when I saw movement out in the backyard and a large, mature, tall timed buck came up out of the hollow doing the bird dog deal with nose to ground and he ran all around the backyard and then went into the hollow on the south side of our house. I am getting ready to head to the bow stand now with temps in the 40’s (it was 86 past 2 days) and a brisk north wind. Tomorrow starts our 9 day Muzzleloader season and I am ready for that too. It’s gotten really good here over the past week for mature buck daytime movement. Good luck all!

Had a good sit this week. Surrounded by does....only to have our #3 buck run in at full speed and start chasing tail....no shot opportunity. Cold front comes in tonight dropping temps 30 degrees. Deer should move tonight as they sense the shift. Colors are waning. Deer are mowing the clover and eating the rye/triticale seed heads from last fall’s planting.EB4F8377-E7E6-4317-B48D-DB6D23DC3ED5.jpeg

I didn't witness it, but he may have visited the still before going hunting....;)

My Father witnessed me do the exact same thing. We were gutting a deer he shot in Indiana one morning in a field across from the truck. I grabbed my bow to go grab the truck to load her up and as I crested a rise in the field I saw a Doe at the same time she noticed me. I ducked down and loaded an arrow. Drew the bow horizontally and came back up to vertical as I stood. 38 yards staring at me. When I shot, she swapped ends to run and the arrow hit her perfectly behind shoulder on opposite side I was aiming. She made it 40 yards and died in the field. It was unbelievable.

Yesterday evening wasn’t great...I did end up seeing a buck but it was last light and he was moving though a thicket in my right. When I was getting ready to get down I thought I had my bow firmly attached to my haul string but apparently I didn’t because it came off and fell hard into the rocks and cracked a limb. Luckily it is now muzzleloader season but haven’t seen anything this morning yet...

Yikes. Okie. You need Eli there to help?
Bow story sounds like something I would do

My daughter is with me this morning in the pop up blind. Its a little warm but we had two young bucks pass through and she got this pic of one of them. She wanted me to shoot but it was too late to get the bow up and drawn in the blind by the time he was here. I told her next time I won't pass a little one.

I'm regretting letting that buck go this morning! She was like "you should shoot it" and I told her I was going to let him walk, but then I saw how excited she was and it was too late. That won't happen again! Nothing is off limits the next time she comes with me. She did have a good time though and it was the closest she's ever been to one. 5 steps and he never spooked. Unfortunately the second buck never gave me a good opportunity.

There’s nothing like hunting with kids, even teenagers. I’ve shot a number of deer and antelope because the kids wanted to be there when it happened. No regrets at all!

Saw a big doe right at dark. The big ten didn't make an appearance. We are gonna try again I. The morning. Unfortunately looks like rain from 8 to 11.

I’m not hunting again until next weekend when it’s supposed to cool off. This hot weather sucks.

Archery Opened in our Zone in the Panhandle yesterday. Unfortunately, I had other commitments that prevented me from going. In fact I won't be able to go until the 1st Weekend in November, but then I will or should have 6 Days and 2 Partial Days (drive time both ways) to hunt.

Man it's starting to hit me real bad! I can feel Fall in the air!!
