Pinetag's Plot - 43 acres in Virginia

The second one needs some limb holders but the camo turned out decent. I also added the pipe insulation on the joints to quiet it down.

Two more stands got camouflaged this morning and I'm really liking my hinge cut screening along the pasture path. Not bad for first year growth and I suspect in another year or two it should truly provide a screen wall.

We got our new little fluff ball home and he is adjusting well. His name is Link and he already likes chewing on deer antlers so hopefully there will be some good shed hunting in his future.

What do you use for branch holders?

I just made some out of pvc and painted them camo. I threw a couple small cedar branches in one as a field test, but I plan to make them much thicker when the season rolls around. You can see it on the left side of the third pic.

Well, I've had so many projects at home lately that I haven't been able to get out and do much at the land. I did get a little work in this morning, but was limited due to some downed trees. It looks almost like a tornado skimmed the canopy because there were multiple trees/tops down all within a 100 yard stretch along the river, and of course many of them had fallen across my atv trail. I was attempting to cut that trail to knock the weeds down and clear the leaves using a push mower I bought recently for that exact purpose. I got as far as the first downed tree and since the chainsaw was back at the truck, that is where I stopped. My other task was to spray both food plots, which I was able to accomplish, and next weekend I will seed and mow them. I'll finish clearing the rest of the trails in Sep and then I have only a few small tasks just before the season starts. Oh, I also added a small post and chained my foot bridge to it so if the water gets high this season it won't roll on its side.

I seeded, limed, and started mowing this morning before the mower caught one too many stumps and likely blew the gearbox. Obviously I didn't get very far. The good news is the burndown from last weekend's spraying is already taking affect so I have to hope the seed makes it down to the soil as those plants start to die back. And we are expecting some tropical storm rains this coming week so germination should be decent. If I have time I may try to use the weedeater to finish everything off before season, but I'm focusing on tree removal from my trails first.

I lightly seeded a fall mix into the horseshoe plot on top of the alsike clover and trefoil. Also, I finished "mowing" the plot with the weedeater and it's getting some good germination in the spot I mowed a couple weeks back, so I think it should turn out decent by the time Oct is here.

Last Fri, me and a buddy cut a bunch of the trees that had fallen across my access trails. There were quite a few more than I expected and unfortunately I lost some more of my big red oaks. I didn't get any pictures as we were trying to make headway on clearing them up. Good news is we saw a nice buck in the afternoon. He didn't spook too bad as we had just started walking down the path from the cottage. He took one or two jumps and then slowly walked down toward the creek. I'll be looking for some of my camera setups to catch sight of him in the future.

Today, tomorrow, and Sat I'll be trying to finish up the last to-do's before the season.

Today I had to redo my gate down by the bridge as the state knocked the post out of the ground when mowing the shoulder. I added some concrete to that post this time. I replaced the pop up blind that had collapsed sometime near the end of/or a little bit after last season. Also, I raked some access trails, and hung some more cameras.

Tomorrow I plan to hang a stand near the northern point as my neighbor has allowed someone to plant soybeans in part of his pasture, so morning hunts will need to be different while those beans are standing. I need to wait for south winds so as not to spook deer in the field. Also, I have a couple more cameras to hang, tie up some mock scrapes, mow the yard, and trim out a parking spot for the new northernmost stand.

My horseshoe plot is germinating and seeing some daytime use as well. We just had over an inch of rain come through and daytime highs are going to be in the 70's, so I'm hoping the remaining seed will germinate and the growth will really pick up soon. I got some morning, mid day, and evening pics during the last week. This little buck and doe hung around the other day long enough to get multiple different pics.

Today's progress...I trimmed out the few remaining trees that had fallen across the paths, I cut a slightly new walking trail to access my 1/2 mile stand so Ican come in more from behind it, I got my northern stand set up, did a little stand camouflaging with my branch holders, hung a camera, and replaced a couple posted signs.

Tomorrow will be some mowing and then setting up my new Tactacam Reveal X cell camera and then it's just waiting on colder weather to arrive for a hunt.

Well, I wasn't familiar with the early youth hunting day because my daughter had only tagged along with me as a sidekick in previous years. This year she made the decision to take the safety course and she got her own shotgun. We had talked about going yesterday but got busy and weren't able to make it out. I did some research and found that youth hunting is allowed for the entire weekend so we were able to get out this evening. It was a bittersweet hunt as she was able to get her first shot opportunity at the doe family group that seems to be living on my place, but I believe she antipated the recoil and shot clean underneath the lead doe. She was extremely excited/pumped to get that first opportunity and hopefully she learned a valuable lesson for future hunts.

I had my first sit yesterday and passed on two small bucks (posted in Live from the stand thread). Also, I just don't have good enough service down along the river for my Tactacam Reveal X, so I switched it to a different spot on the upper 20 with better service. I figured it's better to move it now than when the rut starts kicking up. The good news is the pics/videos show me that I've got a good shooter hanging around. I got a pic of him up by the cottage as well and last night he cruised right in front of the new Reveal X location. Daylight pics prove he might be killable.

Well gents, I think my habitat work is starting to pay off. Multiple pics/sighting of bucks moving during the day.

Yesterday I hunted the ML opener and had a great day! Was literal inches from getting a shot at a nice 8 (maybe 2.5 yo) in the morning and had a small doe bed 50 yards out in front of me for about a 1/2 hour. In the afternoon I saw two different spikes chasing does and at one point and I had 5 deer all around me. Lots of rubs appearing also.

Today I got a cell cam pic of what looks like the big 8 in front of my ridge stand a full hour before the end of shooting light.

Yesterday was a slower day. I had a doe come in with her fawn at around 9:00 AM and my buddy saw a lone doe in the evening. Still getting some daytime buck pics though. It's hard to tell but I think I have two different 2.5 year old 8's crusing consistently through.
