Pinetag's Plot - 43 acres in Virginia

So as gun season continues on I am already starting to plan out next year's improvements. Plenty of tree cutting in my near future as well as some tree plantings. I just placed an order for 25 Norway Spruce and 50 Sandbar Willow from MDC to be delivered in March, which will help me create better screening on my two most vulnerable access trails. It amazes me how quickly they sell out of seedlings in the spring so I made sure to get my order in early.

Hopefully I can still get lucky between now and Jan.

Hunted this morning and only saw a few turkeys. Brought the family out for some "camping" this afternoon. Right now I'm sitting by the fire listening to a couple deer walking around behind the skinning shed.

Pulled a couple cards and daylight activity has definitely slowed, however I did get this buck during shooting hours. He's fairly wide but I think he's been fighting cause it appears he has broken some tines.
Got some small bucks consistently hanging out and a few coyotes and turkeys have moved in.

I pulled the card this morning that is up near the cottage and it did capture the deer I heard last Fri while I was sitting around the campfire. Pretty cool.

My father in law gave me his old woodstove (pic is from his house) so I had a buddy help me move it into the cottage after our hunt this morning. Right now it's sitting on dolleys until I can build a hearth and get the chimney inspected/cleaned. Looking forward to using it!

Looking back at the deer you lost, Try looking to see if there is a Blood Trailing Network in your state. There is one here and before that I never heard of one. They mostly work for Gas Money and they train their dogs to trail wounded Deer by the Blood Smell.

These are not Deer Hunting Dogs.

I called one when I lost the trail after a rain on the Doe I shot. Once the Tracker got there and I took her and her 3 dogs to the spot I shot here, they found her within minutes! Totally a different way than I thought the deer went.

After seeing them work I'd recommend trying them to anyone on a deer you lost the trail on.

Thanks Deadeye! I knew there were folks out there that did this, but I didn't know there was a whole network so I did a little digging and found a webpage showing nearby blood tracking dogs. There are evidently 3 people that do it about an hour's drive from me.

Merry Christmas all! I was able to get out for a couple hours today but unfortunately no deer sightings. My daughter was supposed to come with me but she just couldn't quite get up this morning. I pulled a few cards on the way out and I also set up my new present. A Spypoint micro link cellular camera. Even got my first pics this afternoon of a lone doe during daylight.

With one week left in the season it looks like some decent bucks might survive, possibly even the split brow buck.

Our season is just starting to get good and with 2 does in the freezer, I'm more motivated to work on my property in this cool weather than hunt. I did fill all my feeders and reposition my cams on my hunting lease yesterday, so that stirred the hunting blood a little!

Here is my habitat plan for the upcoming season which includes lots of small bedding thickets (blue), some additional micro plots (green), screening my access trails, and adding two additional stands.

Today I worked on the bedding thicket that is nearest to the creek on the upper 20. There are already some native grasses and briars growing in this area so I expect it to thicken up pretty good over the summer. It's between 1/3 and 1/2 acre.
Before...

And I'm sure many of you have had this issue at least once in your life. It was unusual because the tree was fairly straight and appeared to have a slight lean in the direction I was trying to fell it, so I notched it on the front side and began my back cut. For some reason it tried to fall backwards and pinched the bar. Good thing I ended up bringing my extendable saw with me or it might still be sitting out there.

I’ve had that happen waaay more times than I’d care to admit. I’m no pro, but it’s a humbling experience every time.
