Pinetag's Plot - 43 acres in Virginia

I’ve had that happen waaay more times than I’d care to admit. I’m no pro, but it’s a humbling experience every time.

LOL. Yea, my experience with a saw really started two years ago when I bought my place, so I'm certainly not a pro either. Prior to that I had only cut down a few small trees or cut up the occasional downed tree. I'm sure this won't be the last time it happens to me, but hopefully it will make me more prepared in the future.

I had a forester buddy come out and help me do some cutting today. We got a decent sized bedding area (1/3 acre) cut out on the lower 20 and he was able to fell some much bigger trees than I would attempt. The light coming in should allow some good early successional growth to pop up this summer and the piled up tree tops will provide some good side cover.

An idea to recover from a pinched saw is to always have your bar tool and and extra bar and chain with you. Leave the bar in the tree, put on the new bar and chain, and cut your way out of it. Or have 2 saws... or more. :)

I had to fell a dozen pines bigger than my 18" bar since Hurricane Michael and once I got the backcut deep enough, I drove a wedge into the saw cut and then continued the backcut. Not every tree went the way I wanted it to, but I never pinched the saw.

It's amazing how much you can make a tree fall away from its natural lean by manipulating the thickness of the hinge and the angle of the backcut. Some great videos on YouTube about it. More of an art than I thought and my 16th birthday present was a Stihl chainsaw over 3 decades ago.

Thanks FL Plotter! The extra bar and chain is a great idea!! I will do that from now on.

Got micro plot #2 cut out today. Here is a before and after. Still have some sapling clean up to do with the brushcutter, just like with plot #1, and then an initial spraying.

I also found my first shed on the property. Unfortunately it was last year's antler so nothing pretty to look at, but based on the rodent damage it probably had some decent mass originally. It was hanging in a branch right where I was cutting in the new plot.

And found quite a few rubs in the vicinity,, so I think my new bedding areas and food plots will see some decent buck usage this year.

Got some work done on my micro plots this morning.

I finished cutting the remaining saplings using the brushcutter and then I raked and frost seeded some oats and clover. I didn't get a chance to spray today, but I will spray and seed some rye on my next trip out.

Did some more food plot work today. I raked, sprayed, and seeded my other two micro plots so hopefully they'll all see some use this year.

I also picked up an ROD plant yesterday and I had some cuttings from a member of another forum that were kept in the fridge over winter for planting this year. Unfortunately I wasn't fully prepared with all the necessary supplies when I was ready to walk to the final planting location. I had to run back up to the shed and grab a shovel and then after putting fencing around the mature plant, I realized I didn't have wire cutters so the excess is staying put for now. Haha

And finally, I was able to pick up my new Savage 6.5 Creedmoor for gun season. I've never hunted in a rifle county so this will be my first season with one.

That's a very nice rifle at a very reasonable price. And the 6.5 Creedmoor has longrange deer hunting written all over it. The stock is probably plastic?

Unfortunately it is, but I can't complain for the price. $398 fitted with a Bushnell scope.

That's cheaper than a bargain, that's a steal of a deal. Savage sure knows how to make it tough for the competition to sell rifles. The average hunter spends more than that on a scope alone, sans rifle. And my three Savages, while not quite as favorite as my Sako A7 and my Ruger M77 rifle, are still very accurate rifles.
