By the way, you can eat the fruit also. There is a short window in June/July when the fruit turns yellowish and softens that it tastes like papaya, but you have to beat the raccoons and opossums to get any!

I read that somewhere but with all the raccoons and opposuums I have running around, that's a slim possibility.

Nice update Pinetag. You have made me anxious to see our property wake up from winter. Surprisingly May apples grow here in Northern New York as well though I haven't seen them yet this year. Apparently May apple grows even in zone 3! Not too many plants thrive in so many planting zones as does May Apple. For example Persimmons is a tree that I have never seen before and evidently does not grow in our weather zone. The bark on it is very unique to anything that grows here.

Thanks chainsaw. It certainly is nice to have spring arrive! What's funny is I had never even heard of or knowingly seen may apples before and then a biologist pointed it out to me when I had the delineation survey done last year. Now that I know what they are I see them everywhere. I've learned a lot about habitat in the last year, thanks mainly to all of y'all.

I got 3 new stands loosely hung up today. I still have to move a couple of my other sets from last year but I'm trying to get everything in position now so I won't be down in the woods when summer comes to an end and the season gets close. The double stand is so my daughter can come with me.

The oats are really starting to put on some growth in the creek plot but the deer don't seem to be touching them. The feathered edge hinge cuts are providing some good side cover though.

Chestnuts are still doing well so far and the new food plot has some good clover growth in spots but there is a lot of grass in others. I guess I'll be spraying clethodim soon.

Today was not about the work but about the family fun time. My neighbor took us over to his farm and let us bottle feed a calf and play with some baby chics. We also took a walk down to the river and sat on the ATV bridge overlooking the creek and finally let my daughter practice shooting.

Thanks guys! We had a good time and my daughter seems to be showing more of an interest in the outdoors all the time. Getting my wife out there in the woods when everything is green is an accomplishment in itself. She's not too keen on bugs and poison ivy. LOL

I just got some EW to try out as a screen along the old road bed for this upcoming season. I'm going to spray a 10 foot wide area (5 ft on either side of the ditch) for the entire length of the road and then rake away any old leaf debris before seeding in a week or so. This area is partially shaded so I hope it will get enough sunlight to grow at least 6' tall. The good news is the road bed is about 10 feet higher than the surrounding timber so even if it doesn't get that tall it should still do the trick. Also, as far as a long term plan, I hope to get some Norway spruce and maybe mix in some shrubs to plant next spring.

The second pic is the best one showing what the path looks like. The main road is just to the left and my property is off to the right. Where I'm walking is only about 20 yards from my truck pull off and there are lots of cedars already there, so that provides some decent cover for about the first 50 yards. But if you look closely you can see it gets much more open further down the path and that is where i need the majority of the screening.

Google earth finally updated the satellite imagery in my area (2/25/19)! Prior to this the most recent update was 2015. I thought it was pretty cool that my atv bridge crossing the creek is now visible!!

So my dad came out for a little while this evening and bush hogged the yard area while I weed eated some of the edges and then sprayed some big patches of japanese honeysuckle along the driveway.
