2020 Live from the Stand

I have seen 3 small bucks Since daybreak but walking in here across a pasture I walked right into a large group of bedded deer...it wasn’t pretty...

Doe down in sight, Happy Birthday to me!

Opening day rifle, should’ve worn body armor and orange. These hills are rockin!

My heart is racing. Just had a buck in the 140 range pass by at 35 yards. Thought it was my target when I first saw him. I need to calm down.
This year a 130-140 would be in grave danger if it came by me...really big deer either left or got poached out this year...2020 not good!

Congratulations on the meat and happy birthday! Rifle opener here as well and I have only heard 1 shot that sounded like it might be within 5 miles.

Our Rifle Opener in our Zone is Thanksgiving Day. Why they came up with that I'll never know. Traditions I guess.

In any event, the Thursday of Thanksgiving, Friday After are Buck Only, then Saturday and Sunday are Buck or Doe Days, then back to Crossbow for Buck Only for a week, then back to Rifle in mid December. Crazy crazy stuff.

We have never made Opening Day as we spend Thanksgiving with the Family, then head up early Friday to hunt through the rest and come back Monday.

Congrats to all who have put deer down so far and those that have the ability to pass those Big Bucks.

The parade of does has stopped and sadly my target buck wasn’t with them.

I’m enjoying this year too. I’ve passed some great bucks and been able to hunt more than ever. Seeing these does move through and the other bucks teaches me quite a bit.

Finally managed to get a doe on the ground; I’ll be in the haybale blind this afternoon after a buck now. Dawna might come with me and try to tag a doe, since she shot a good one last year, she wants me to be the buck hunter if we go together.

A little less than live, but I saw one little buck this morning. He fed down a narrow wheat plot that I have on a pipeline and eased on into the woods. General season has been open here since the 7th, and I only heard one shot this morning.

Opening day in our corner of upstate for rifle today. Conditions were unseasonably warm and windy. I saw 9 deer this morning and another 20 this evening. No shooters, and absolutely no sign of rut activity. Usually, the yearling bucks are chasing every doe and fawn they can find....not so this year. Temperatures will be cooler with much less wind tomorrow. While I’m in no hurry to fill my tag, I am disappointed with the lack of mature buck movement. Perhaps they are locked down on the last of the receptive does.... Looking forward to another chance tomorrow.
Turkey numbers continue to be out of control. Counted more than 60, and this did not include a big flock of Toms I regularly catch on trail cams. I need to work harder filling tags in the fall when hens are legal. I’m already making plans for next spring’s plantings. I love this time of year!

I somehow always can figure out to be exactly the very last possible place a deer would want to be at the last possible second of light in the day whether it be a food plot or way down in the woods...I sat in the big woods well back into our place only seeing a squirrel and it got so late I decided to get down so I was tying my pull cord on my rifle when I heard something approaching. The W wind had completely died and the thermals had taken over and for a bit they moved air to the East...which is where these 7 does walked right into...unbeknownst to me some deer were also coming from the east and even though I only saw 7 bodies pass going 1 way when they boogered from my scent 13 ran back the other way. I sat until I was sure it was clear and climbed down only to be blown at by 2 more deer to the west and 1 coming from the north...tomorrow is another day...

Same here, no buck movement and saw doe and hunters lol. 20 years ago I started hunting the Catskills for fall turkey. Saw 500 in one day driving around. Over 9 years the population declined to not many. Maybe from what you see turkey are on the comeback there. Haven’t been out there for at least 10 years now
