2019 Live from the Stand

Good story, question is, are you done ? I know nothing of your bag limits or even whether you want to kill another deer this year.

It has to be a pretty good buck to tempt me early, (which yours is), I enjoy it too much. I can always hunt hogs, but if you get on them too heavy they’ll go completely nocturnal, like 2 a.m. nocturnal, and this old man is gonna be sleeping then. ;)

Great deer cutman! I bet you are glad that 1 showed up... Ihaven’t even really began to think about starting hunting. Horseflies will carry you off this year in Oklahoma!

I have 2 more buck tags and 20 doe tags. Don’t think I will shoot another buck but I will shoot lots of does.

I was mostly speaking of a delayed recovery...

I’ve recovered deer the next day in both states. Temperatures in the upper 60’s overnight in both scenarios. The key in that situation is a quick early morning recovery. If you had to leave them overnight and didn’t recover until late morning on a hot day I’d think you’re probably too late. I’ve never had that situation though. My next morning recoveries have been within a few hours of first light or not at all. I’ve searched for 5+ hours a few times but never successfully.

20 doe tags, that’s almost as good as Hawaii! Have you ever had a season when you needed to fill them all? Even on large acreage in SC that would be some serious herd reduction!

In September our temps are 80’s overnight...I wouldn’t eat a deer that had laid overnight in temps like that. Closest I have gotten is a buck I killed first week of October 2017. 70 when I took the shot right before dark and a crack of dawn recovery at 57 and he almost didn’t pass the smell test...

80’s overnight are definitely rough conditions. Temperatures in the California A zone soar well over 100 during the day but typically retreat back to the 60’s at night. Maybe mid 70’s at night in Hawaii but I can’t think of a time I’ve hunted with overnight temps in the 80’s.

10 doe tags each for 2 properties. On one property (my BP property tour thread) I could easily kill 10 and the property would probably benefit. The other property is smaller and 10 might be a little tougher but there are lots of deer around. The herd could sustain it but they would go nocturnal early. Our season runs from Aug. 15 - Jan. 1.

Nice deer Cutman! Hope you have a lot of doe tag fun coming and maybe even see another buck during rut that is irresistible yet again.

Nice Buck.

Pa used to have an abundance of Deer at one time, then they opened up the Doe Tags to 3-5 per year and the herd dropped very quickly. Many of the Hunters around my Brother's Place now buy all they can but only fill one or two at the most. Through their efforts their local Herd has made a comeback of sorts and they are seeing Deer again during most sits.
Many believe it was the Car Insurance Companies that were behind the push for more Tags due to the amount of Claims for Deer Damage.

Each Area and State is different and one would hope their Commission in Charge knows what they are doing when they set the Limits. Florida just set theirs for the first time in years. A Lot of the Hunters lost their MINDS when they were told they could now only harvest 5 Deer per Year, only Two of which could be antlerless. The Forums and FB Pages lit up with claims of "I can't feed my family on only 5 deer a year" and "I'll shoot what I want just like I always have. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

SC is the most redneck state in the US when it comes to deer “management.” We are a disgrace. Some positive changes have occurred in the last couple of years, but it will take generations to change the culture.

I have 20 doe tags but will probably use 5-8 of them. My parents will take 2 deer, my in-laws will take 1, my employees will take a couple, and my wife and I will take 3-4. If people ask me for venison I will provide it. Otherwise the excess tags will go unused.

I think your State changing their Rules about 2 years back helped Florida get on board with changing theirs.

For YEARS it was from the time Archery Started (mid Sept in the Central Area) until General Gun ran out in Early January, You could take 2 Deer A DAY with a Possession Limit of 4. During Archery you could take your choice of 2 Bucks, 2 Does or 1 Buck and 1 Doe per day. Once General Gun Opened it was 2 Bucks per Day, unless it was Doe Days when you could take the same as Archery.

Someone figured it out one time and I thing it was around 350 Deer Per Year you could Legally Take with the old System. Insane Really. In reality there were a Few Hunters that took a BUNCH and a Lot that took few or none. The Deer Population was spotty and High Numbers in some parts and Private Lands and low to next to none on others.

With the new Regs the guys that were used to taking 10-20 a year freaked out and used the claim that "stopping the good hunters from taking theirs won't help the poor hunters get theirs". In reality it is partly true and not true. If they are limited to 5, then the other deer they would of shot would be still there and some other folks might get a chance at getting one.

In any case there have been a lot of guys claiming on Public FB pages that they will continue to shoot as many as they want. That this new Reg is an infringement of the Government on their Rights to Feed their Family. We shall see what the end of it is after this first year passes.

Nice buck cutman! Kudos for sticking it out in this freakin' heat wave we have going on down south. Atlanta record is 15 days of 90 plus temps in September. We tied that today and it looks like we're gonna break it by a long shot. Our archery season opened last weekend but I just can't get motivated to sit a stand in the evenings in 90 plus temps. Hats off to you guys that get it done.

Brooks text'd his CO location last nite which showed him spiked out at 11,090 ft elevation. Prolly woke to mid 30s temps this morning.

Sitting in one of our woods stands. Nice cool morning. Had a good young buck come through early down the road. Wife is sitting a clear cut with our daughter. They had a nice 6 point come through. Coyotes were going nuts at sunrise. We should probably do something about them.
