I was mostly speaking of a delayed recovery...I hunted in CA for years with temps north of 100 and in Hawaii with average highs in the 80’s. Never lost an animal to spoilage.

Good story, question is, are you done ? I know nothing of your bag limits or even whether you want to kill another deer this year.
It has to be a pretty good buck to tempt me early, (which yours is), I enjoy it too much. I can always hunt hogs, but if you get on them too heavy they’ll go completely nocturnal, like 2 a.m. nocturnal, and this old man is gonna be sleeping then.

I have 2 more buck tags and 20 doe tags. Don’t think I will shoot another buck but I will shoot lots of does.
In September our temps are 80’s overnight...I wouldn’t eat a deer that had laid overnight in temps like that. Closest I have gotten is a buck I killed first week of October 2017. 70 when I took the shot right before dark and a crack of dawn recovery at 57 and he almost didn’t pass the smell test...I’ve recovered deer the next day in both states. Temperatures in the upper 60’s overnight in both scenarios. The key in that situation is a quick early morning recovery. If you had to leave them overnight and didn’t recover until late morning on a hot day I’d think you’re probably too late. I’ve never had that situation though. My next morning recoveries have been within a few hours of first light or not at all. I’ve searched for 5+ hours a few times but never successfully.

20 doe tags, that’s almost as good as Hawaii! Have you ever had a season when you needed to fill them all? Even on large acreage in SC that would be some serious herd reduction!

Nice Buck.
Pa used to have an abundance of Deer at one time, then they opened up the Doe Tags to 3-5 per year and the herd dropped very quickly. Many of the Hunters around my Brother's Place now buy all they can but only fill one or two at the most. Through their efforts their local Herd has made a comeback of sorts and they are seeing Deer again during most sits.
Many believe it was the Car Insurance Companies that were behind the push for more Tags due to the amount of Claims for Deer Damage.
Each Area and State is different and one would hope their Commission in Charge knows what they are doing when they set the Limits. Florida just set theirs for the first time in years. A Lot of the Hunters lost their MINDS when they were told they could now only harvest 5 Deer per Year, only Two of which could be antlerless. The Forums and FB Pages lit up with claims of "I can't feed my family on only 5 deer a year" and "I'll shoot what I want just like I always have. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
I think your State changing their Rules about 2 years back helped Florida get on board with changing theirs.SC is the most redneck state in the US when it comes to deer “management.” We are a disgrace. Some positive changes have occurred in the last couple of years, but it will take generations to change the culture.
I have 20 doe tags but will probably use 5-8 of them. My parents will take 2 deer, my in-laws will take 1, my employees will take a couple, and my wife and I will take 3-4. If people ask me for venison I will provide it. Otherwise the excess tags will go unused.
Sitting in one of our woods stands. Nice cool morning. Had a good young buck come through early down the road. Wife is sitting a clear cut with our daughter. They had a nice 6 point come through. Coyotes were going nuts at sunrise. We should probably do something about them.
