Your Favorite Stand Location

Got the idea for this thread reading Cutman's post about his favorite stand in the Live thread. Those of you who have sets that just really stand out, how about putting up some images showing the stand location, prevailing wind, access etc, and describe what makes it so good? I think that'd be a great resource to learn about stand placement for those of us without much experience with it.

This is my favorite stand. It’s a salt marsh that basically cuts the property in half. There are two limiting factors - tidal water and wind directions. High tides over 7 feet will have the whole area under water by 6” or so, and that cuts down on deer movement. Any wind from the South makes this stand unsittable, which is a pain in early season.

The deer use the salt flat to bed, eat, play, and rut. The most deer I ever saw in one sit was 37. I also have seen otters, bald eagles, mottled ducks, redfish, raccoons, a coyote, bobcats, and lots of fiddler crabs.

Pasted Graphic 1.jpgHere is my best set. It requires a Northeast wind to hunt (green arrow) Access is shielded from bedding to the west by using the back side of a hill, and from the west by an overgrown fencerow. The steep banks of the creek and the mature timber left by the loggers around them serve as major travel corridors traveling between the thick bedding created by the planted pines. Almost all of the movement along the creeks is funneled to a single creek crossing at the northwest corner of the orchard. From there deer can move out to whichever of the two plots they would like to feed in. Both plots encompass most of what is an L shaped bowl that is surrounded by higher ground & thick cover. Red arrows represent deer movement patterns.

Here is my best stand location...red lines show deer travel patterns. West is a very deep hollow and East is a creek bottom...this stand sits in the middle of the punch point...almost dead center of our place...

Okie, Being so far in the middle of the action, how are you managing to get in without spooking a whole lot of deer? and once you're there what is keeping your wind from doing the same?

I was wondering the same thing. Looks like its been awfully productive.

We only hunt it with a northerly wind...it is true deer smell me after they pass but it doesn’t seem to matter...they get boogery and then they calm down and go on...I have passed mature buck after mature buck and normally see them multiple sits...most every deer I see is within bow range.
