Ok, quick run down...had been getting photos of this buck for the past 3 years with these “Kickers” off his G2’s and decided if I had the opportunity he would be on the short list of deer I would take off our farm.
He disappeared off all the cameras about a week ago and I figured he met the same fate as many of our better deer which is poaching by someone using rifles day or night during our archery only season. I had been having a tough time getting to my main stand in the white oaks because deer seemed to already be there every time I went out and they would bust me. Yesterday I went out there with my tractor mid day and moved stands and put up posted signs and just basically ran every deer we had on the place out.
When I got done I waited till 4:00 and decided to go back out to the white oak stand. I got on stand and it was super slow for an hour when a Tom turkey came by but he was much too nervous to draw on. At about 6:35 I heard a deer walking and I finally saw it was a doe all alone coming in for acorns. I watched her a couple minutes and then I heard something else walking in and it was the buck with the Kickers. I got my bow off the hanger and got ready while I watched him work 2 scrapes, rub a tree, and stand behind limbs for what it seemed like forever. He finally took the 2 steps I needed and I drew and released hitting him a bit high and further back than I had hoped. He ran toward the deepest hollow on our place and I kept listening and finally I heard what I thought was him thrashing. I got down and went to the shot sight and found where he had torn up the ground leaking but very little blood. I followed small spots of blood using my light because it was getting dim and my old eyes aren’t what they used to be. I found him at the brink of the hollow and in 3 more yards he would have rolled to the bottom of it...the high back entry wound came out just in front of his hip and all his blood ran out when he hit the ground. I took a couple photos last night, gutted him, weighed him, and then used my iPhone this morning on a timer setting with my tractor as the holder to get the daytime photos.

Well as I had alluded to in another post yesterday was the opener of youth rifle season in Oklahoma and I had promised my grandson I would take him hunting. I took my buck to the processor on Thursday and on my way back home picked him up from his mother since he is out of school on fall break...it was near noon so I took him to our favorite eating establishment.
While eating lunch I gave him the choice of hunting at the house or us going camping at the deer lease. He chose camping out so we got a few items and his rifle and headed that way. When we got to camp he took a few shots with the rifle and we knew he was on so we cooked hotdogs over the open fire and watched a movie in the camper and called it a night. At 5 am we got up and got ready and left on the 4 wheeler for our stand at 6 am. We were on stand about 6:25 and at 6:30 we had a big buck walk under us in the moonlight but it was well before shooting light so we just enjoyed the moment and it got him excited. A bit after daylight we had 2 does and a spike buck in front of us...
Eli decided not to shoot a deer because he wanted to see if anything else showed up and the does were pretty small. We just sat and watched them...before we called it a morning we had 3 more deer come through but nothing Eli determined was a shooter. He wanted a big doe or a rack buck since he has both tags.
He went and looked another stand over before we went in for lunch but once we got in it we realized the wind would be all wrong for yesterday...
We met up with some other lease members and their sons for lunch and then went back out at 4:00. Eli chauffeured me around on my 4 wheeler. At around 5:45 this doe stepped out and she was alone and much bigger than any that we had seen so Eli whispered he wanted to shoot it and I told him go ahead...I should have been recording with my phone but hindsight is 20/20 and I thought about it just as he was pulling the trigger. I saw the deer hump up and run out of sight and told him it looked fatal so we got down and could not find any blood but we found the deer about 30 yards from the shot...
The deer dressed 82 lbs and is a decent size for our deer lease...
Eli was really happy and especially happy when I told him we could go again. He had to go to his dads on Saturday and we have church on Sunday morning so we are going again tomorrow afternoon here on our place looking for a rack buck. The wind will be really iffy so we are going no further than our food plot into the property. I also told him his buck tag was also good for our 2 week general firearms season starting the week of Thanksgiving so we have several more options if tomorrow doesn’t work out. What a fun day we had yesterday!
