Rain fizzled out before it got here. I think you'll like the oats, deer here really like them and come spring/summer they produce several seeds for the turkeys. Never have had them freeze out even with temps reaching single digits.
 
I think the Rye Grain I bought this year was too old and I got very little germination. The wheat and oats did well but rye grain was poor...I made my last pass across the road before our season begins tomorrow and it is pretty much how I expected. The young bucks and does are using the plots and limited use of the feeders but the big deer are staying hid out in the oaks. We are having a bumper crop of acorns this year and the floor in the woods is covered with white oak acorns and they are still dropping. We are forecast for 70 degrees at dawn and 90 by midday and a repeat of that Wednesday...Thursday is a high of 70 and a low in the 50’s...Thursday will be my opener!

I know where I will be for the opener and I can use the WiFi from the house!
 
The first few days of season have been fairly uneventful...I have seen a few does in the backyard from the stand and I have hunted our 90 a few times...most of the bucks I see are back in the white oaks, I saw 4 8 pointers and a spike there yesterday evening...

Even saw a little action on our plot this morning to the tune of 9 does and a spike.

A couple days ago I went down to the deer lease to clean our camper and get it ready to stay in...it developed a leak sometime over the past several months and it looks like I have some repairs to do soon but I at least patched the leak. I then went and checked the 2 cameras I put out a few days before...

The first one is a spot my wife mainly sits when she hunts and is showing promise...these are 2 different bucks...had pictures of others but these 2 she would target...

Next I went up the mountain where I normally do all my hunting while I am down there...

This buck is 1 of my targets...I have had photos of him for 4 years and he changes very little other than a little mass and his body...

What's the bear hunting climate like down there? Could a guy find permission to hunt a bear by knocking on doors, or is it kind of like whitetails with people wanting a lease or big $$$? I would like to shoot a bear (or even a hog) at some point in my life, OK is close, and I'm cheap!

Tree huggers have bear on lockdown in my county. Has to be east of 69 Highway and south of I-40 which is just a few miles from us to be legal to hunt. You would have to find a landowner down that way...

Hogs are a different story but right now they aren’t in my area here at home. Been about 5 months since I had a picture. You just have to find someone who has them at the time you want to hunt them because they do travel and move in and out of areas unlike deer...

Cat, most everyone I know here consider bears as vermin but I am sure some outfitters will soon be booking guided bear hunts in the few counties south of us that have a season...

I would just knock on doors in those counties. Probably find folks that feel the same as we do...

Thanks Okie! I might do some door knocking this winter and see if I can find an opportunity for next year. Looking at the link you provided it seems that a tag must be purchased before season starts (which has already happened)...

What I didn't find was whether tags can be purchased over the counter or through an application process. Do you happen to know?

I believe you can buy all tags online. Looks like a non-resident bear this year was $506 but like you said you would have had to bought it before season if you were bowhunting but we haven’t gotten to muzzleloader season yet so if you wanted to hunt with one of those you could buy it before our muzzleloader season begins in 2.5 weeks...
 
I'll be coaching the next couple of weekends so time to come down and look for a place to hunt isn't available. It's a good idea, just bad timing.

Does anyone else have to “stalk” their deer stand every single time? Morning, evening, mid day? My stand back here in the white oaks on our place it doesn’t seem to matter because deer I guess are here 24/7 right now. Every single time I have come to this stand deer have been feeding around it and something always gets spooked...

This afternoon I got all the way to my ladder as quietly as possible because I had to wait till 4 pm for the wind to switch from south to north. When I tied my bow to the pull rope a nice buck jumped up about 20 yards away and left rapidly :(

Acorns are about to beat me to death in my tree right now!
 
Frustration...
Yesterday evenings hunt was a wash. Cells of rain popped up just NW and I started getting soaked so I left the white oaks and headed to a ground blind near our food plot. I have not sat in this blind yet but was feeling good about it. About 20 minutes into my sit at 5:45 I heard a lone high power rifle shot that sounded like it was very near our north boundary. The longer I sat the madder I got so I got up and headed that way even though I knew it was prime time. I have to walk completely through our property to get there and I jumped deer several times. The rain kicked in big time and it wasn’t long until I was soaked to the bone. I made a loop along most of our north side but found no trespassers. Must have been on neighbors side. It was not a sighting in shot...I am pretty aggravated because in the past 2 weeks the top 2 bucks I have had on trail cam for many years each have disappeared and I have heard single shots in the dark and first light and late evening...mind you it is archery only now...

This morning I have high hopes with a north breeze, 41 degrees and clear morning with a nearly full moon to walk by. I decide to give the white oaks a go since the plot doesn’t tend to draw mature deer until white oaks stop producing or the seeking phase of the rut. I get lots of 2.5 and 3.5 year old pics in the plot but the big deer stay to the timber. As I was easing to my stand I got to within 30 yards of it and deer exploded everywhere blowing and carrying on. I know they did not smell me but that upright shape in the moonlight certainly boogered them. I have deer run a few yards and just continue to blow and I did not want them watching me climb into my stand. I decided to continue to a nice stand deeper into the property I call the “bat stand” due to the bat I found right behind my head under the pine bark in it 1 day. It is a travel corridor with very few white oak trees. It is one of 4 areas the deer use to access the white oaks. As I continue easing down the old logging road I jump deer on 3 more occasions all the way to the stand but these deer are just leaving and not hanging around to see what spooked them. I get into
My tree and Just barely get my bow drawn up when a spike buck walks directly under me in the moonlight headed toward the neighbor. Since that time I have seen 1 squirrel...this property is loaded with deer mainly morning and evening on feeding patterns and is extremely difficult to access...usually the only time we do really good here is the seeking/chasing phase... somehow need to create completely dead deer zones where I can access without spooking anywhere from 5 to 20 deer every trip in...
 
I just came in from setting 2 new ladder stand setups. 1 is in a travel corridor between 2 white oak groups and is south of my normal stand. It is actually within 3 feet of my road system through the property. I can almost always make it to this point before I start busting deer out. I am going to wait until muzzleloader season to sit it because it is pretty brushy for a bow setup. Deer typically start off in the white oaks I normally try to get to and then they work their way to the next white oak grove closer to my plot. I also put a ladder stand at the southern end of the food plot for use with a rifle. It sits back a bit and I can cover areas I could not cover from my other stands and it will also give me the most stealth stand to enter to hunt the plot. After I got this done I posted the newest 10 acres of our 90 as I have been hearing some shots from that area...
