Live from the Stand - 2024

Deer season has started in South Carolina. It actually feels pretty nice, and there is a consistent east wind. I expect to see a lot of deer in the next few hours.

Saw 13 deer including several nice bucks. I hope my niece gets one of them when she’s able to hunt with me.

My niece shot her first buck tonight - a beautiful 188 lb 8 pointer. I was in the stand with her and shook like it was my first deer all over again. Awesome!

Exactly what I was thinking ! Congrats to your niece, looks like a mature buck for sure. Weekender, use the word mature please, we don’t like to be called fatty……even though we is !

This buck was at least 5.5 years old. I passed him up several times last year but decided to shoot him this year because he was bullying the younger bucks. I was afraid he was going to push those deer off the property.

Ha ! Three broken points, yep, he was a bully alright. I had one like that a few years ago that ran my target buck off. I captured most of it on a game camera. I killed him about a month later. He was the only buck I ever caught on every camera on my place, and I had eight of them out. Good decision taking him out !

Almost live

Hunted a secluded apple I found last month. Noticed it had started dropping and there was a small rub.

Sat on some old logging slash 25 yards away.

Had to stand on a moss covered log to shoot. He didn’t go far luckily.

I’ve been going out some recently and had several 15 to 25 yard shots at does and small bucks but we don’t need any meat right now. This weekend is our 2 day early ML season. Yesterday afternoon I had a 135 inch, mature eight point in range but decided to wait since it is so early in the season. I’m not hunting this morning but will go out this afternoon.

That’s a buck of a lifetime in western NC!

Good luck up there, hard to believe it’s Mid-late October already.

I’m leaving today for a three week work trip, will need to see a constant stream of deer on this thread to keep me sane!
