House and Habitat build thread:

Before we moved we had a neighbor who made a lot of elderberry wine from plant he grew himself. He's kind of like a grandpa to me and this spring he gave me some cuttings from his plants. I wanted to keep his elderberry legacy going so I took really good care of them, but wasn't sure what to expect from the cuttings. Well they seemed to have taken root really well and have already produced berries.

Since moving to the country we now burn our own trash. I've never been comfortable with the open top barrel with vent holes in the bottom. To much wind, fire risk, and smoldering incomplete burns. This morning I added a screened exhaust tube and an intake tube (that perfectly fits my leaf blower). The combination of intake and updraft created a nice test burn. Adding the leaf blower made the exhaust sound like a jet with a very complete burn. Best of all there were no flaming embers or sparks coming out, and almost no ashes in the bottom when it was done!

catscratch...That's a high-tech, step back in time deal right there! Growing up in the country, we didn't know waste collection existed. We had a trash dump in a gulley about 100 yds out the back door. Everything got burned. Thought many times I should take a metal detector to the old dump sight. No telling what I might find. Love your your ingenuity!!!

Lol. Dumps and metal detectors would be a blast. Probably find some really cool stuff!

We used to burn trash but my wife refined me somewhat so now we use trash collection...the kicker is our trash collection is still at our other house so every week I haul our trash down there. My mom and dad burned trash our entire lives and a few times there were some fires that got out

The wife said I managed to redneck-up the most redneck thing on the place. My powers should not be underestimated! I still feel much better that there is less chance to start a fire.

Got my "test plot" of grocery store beans in this evening (dgallow, turns out I did have a bag of lentels in there).
Probably will learn that rabbits like beans instead of how well they handle cold...

Well, the trash burners has been used several times and it's doing a great job. Unfortunately, as much fun as it is to turn it into a roaring jet engine with the leaf blower... it isn't needed to get a good burn.

Went for a quick run when I got home tonight and had to stop to take in the view. Someone east of me is getting a thunderstorm tonight!

great thread looking forward to watching the magic bean test but i cant stop thinking abt how much i love the counter tops!

I still love the view over the pond there. Everything looks great, good job on transplanting those berry bushes.
Really happy with the Elderberry cuttings. They rooted really quick and have tons of new growth.
The pond is the best. We dedicated a lot of our life to be able to see that thing every day.

Don't know if you guys remember the video my wife made of the rut chase into the lake (it ended with breeding), but I'm pretty sure this is the doe and the offspring results of that day.

Looks like black eye peas are the clear winner for unbelievably fast germination.

Most of the beans are now represented. Interesting note for throw and mow guys; even though all these seeds were buried, most of the first to germinate are under thatch. The seed buried and left with naked ground on top are slower to germinate.

100% of the store bought seeds are now represented. Even the "baby" lima beans (which I wasn't sure about, I had thought that they might have been harvested before maturity) and lentels are up.
