House and Habitat build thread:

Yes, it's the basement. I had hoped to be farther along than this but it's slow work (for me anyway, mud. dry. sand. mud...).

Are you getting a rain this morning? We have 70mph winds coming, hope it dies down a little before getting here.

The kids are making use of the last few days of summer.

The millet is turning out to be one of my favorite plots. It's tall and producing tons of seed.

Brought in our tongue and groove for the ceiling. Going to be a lot of work but it'll look great.

This is Rip (she has a torn ear that is visible from the house while in the yard plots), I've become quite attached to her over the last 10 months.

She has a fawn but we don't see it in the open much.

These guys have been regulars for the summer. Some have some character to them.

Those counter tops are great! Can't wait to see them with some finish on them.
Thanks. Not sure how I'm going to finish yet. I have lots of wood going into this room and I want it all to coridnate somehow. I like that it's all wood harvested from the place.

This land is a working cattle ranch. About 90 days ago 321 steers were shipped in for summer pasture. We shipped them out over the last couple of days with the last load going out this morning... all but one. The one that jumped the loading alley wall right before going into the trailer. The one that pranced down to the creek and woods with his ears and tail up in F*** You manner. The one that is going to cost more time and effort than the other 320 combined.

Get a dart gun....rompum/telazol cocktail....let em wake up in trailer!

Hit the supermarket and bought a little bit of every bean I could find. Like Jack, I'm always looking for that magic bean so to speak. At just over a dollar a pound I'm not out much if none do the trick. I want something that is easy and handles the cold well. I'll do the rag test for germination, plant a row of each in the yard, and the rest will get spread into the fall plots.

Lentils come in winter and spring varieties....want to say IndianHead is the winter type....look a lot like vetch.

I've used the dart gun to administer meds on sick ones before (they can get a little cranky and wild when they aren't feeling well and don't always cooperate). Never tried to knock one out though. Is that coctail something I can get from the local vet?
To get this one we just moved the cows over to that pasture. He grouped with them in short notice. Ran them all through the pens and sorted him off.

Lol, they had red and green lentils... I think they are the only thing I didn't buy on that shelf. Even thought about it because they are a smaller seed that would probably work better for how I throw and mow.

I'm with Okie on the counter tops and the cedar posts. Looks great! Keep the updates coming.

Got a feeling this isn't the only time this guy is going to stick his tongue out at me.

He has great mass at the bases, some kickers and trash, maybe crab claws, and still some growing to do. I think he is pretty neat.

Since moving to the country we now burn our own trash. I've never been comfortable with the open top barrel with vent holes in the bottom. To much wind, fire risk, and smoldering incomplete burns. This morning I added a screened exhaust tube and an intake tube (that perfectly fits my leaf blower). The combination of intake and updraft created a nice test burn. Adding the leaf blower made the exhaust sound like a jet with a very complete burn. Best of all there were no flaming embers or sparks coming out, and almost no ashes in the bottom when it was done!

For those interested in a few key switchgrass plants, it can be transplanted. I dug a small section (about 6in diameter) of switch last fall while dormant and planted in the yard. It has taken off this yr and is basically a full sized plant in just one summer. No mowing or spraying to keep competition down.
