Drought and Survival

We got the tail of it. Rained about 1.5 hours last night. Gave my wheat and clover a drink for sure!
Are your buildings still there?

Looks like 1-2 more inches of rain expected tonight south of Hays. Forecast includes hail and strong storms. Hope they miss that hail as a lot of crops still out in the field.

I planted my home place last week and planting the lease tomorrow. Not much moisture in the ground but got some forecast for Thursday, holding my breath.

Well I think the drought here broke...got 3/4” a couple weeks back, 1.1” last weekend and now we had a good rain starting at about 8:30 am till about 1:45 pm...some of it very heavy! Even got runoff from it! Solid rain chances the next 2 days as well...

Bad news again today. Something happened to my tractor, sounded like it threw a rod. Anyway, parked it, rented one, and got six plots planted with awnless wheat and forage oats. Need a rain and a loan !o_O

Sorry to hear that DC.
We’ve picked up almost 2” in the last 36 hours. I’m looking forward to seeing the plots this weekend

Hopefully tractors aren’t as overpriced as trucks right now!
With my buddy’s help I got it to my mechanic today. Probably won’t hear anything from him for a couple weeks. He’s very good and stays behind all the time. He ain’t cheap either, but when he fixes it, it’s fixed !

I did learn something though, as it was a JD that I rented. You couldn’t run fast enough to sell me a JD !:)

How did it compare to the kubota M6040?

What size JD?

Bill, I don’t know what number was on it but it was a 65 hp machine. I’m sure if I got used to it I’d learn to live with it except for a couple things.

The good points: You could hang meat in the cab, the A/C was that good.
I liked the throttle and it’s placement. The lever to work the lift was placed better than mine.

The bad points: No bucket leveling gauge.
The implement wouldn’t stay where you stopped the lever. When I lowered my seeder to pour in fert or seed the damn thing would just keep on going down. My PTO shaft separated three times and screwed up the plastic safety sleeves.
The brakes were too far to the right for me and that made the accelerator even farther to the right. Uncomfortable !

I’m probably well on my way to being a grumpy old fart, but I like things like I like ‘em !;)

We got .9” of rain here Wednesday night/Thursday morning and it saved my food plots. I had wheat/oats about 4” tall and needed rain badly. We got it just right too. It rained for about four hours so most of it soaked in. :)

It’s way too early to resurrect this thread, but we are going to be hurting here majorly if we don’t get rain soon. I haven’t seen the ponds this low since 2012. Subsoil moisture is good right now, but that could disappear quick.

Looking like Hays is getting rain Thurs night and then early next week again. Hoping they got it right.

Still looking for some substantial rain, not concerned yet, just a little nervous.

Forecast for western KS is a few days of 50-60 mph wind gusts and no rain chances for 10 days. Hoping that changes for all of us.

I am probably 300 miles (or less) south of you in SW Arkansas. We have had ten inches of rain in the last month. Three more predicted next week. River is flooding into my property. I am sick of it. Neighbor row cropper doesnt have a chance of planting at least for the next month. He was going to plant corn - no way he makes that planting window.

300 miles can be the difference between floods and droughts

This last year 50 miles made a tremendous difference here locally.

Maybe I need to include “swamp” in my handle??
