Drought and Survival

Looks like it’s going to miss us again. Heavy rain south moving east. One weather forecast had the wherewithal to say watch for flooding today. Yeah right….

I’ve never seen anything like this, drought is usually a regional thing, right? We have an circle with about a 35-40 mile radius, perhaps a little farther to the NW than other points on the compass, that cannot get rain. It’s such a small area that it doesn’t even show up on the current drought monitor map as even being uncommonly dry, wrong!! Once again, the rain stayed in the clouds as they passed over and then they are about to open up 50 miles east of us. Looks like MO and AR are about to get another soaking. Such a freaking helpless feeling to see rain so close but so far away. It’s more miserable than the common regional drought by far.

two week forecast in SW AR shows about six inches of rain coming - on top of already saturated ground. A lot of farmers still havent planted yet this year.

Corn is in the ground around here, already hurting for rain. Gonna be a rough summer if something doesn’t change asap. I just disked up our garden, it’s powder dry, never seen that in April before. Feast or famine, isn’t that what they say??
I guess on the plus side for farmers, the wheat looks amazing. It’s a dry land crop and most years it gets too wet soon after heading out and it hurts production. Also turkeys might finally get a good hatch this year without the normal big rains.
 
We’ll, I guess our next chance that will evaporate at the last minute is the first of next week. They dropped us from a 65% chance of strong storms overnight to a 10% chance. Meanwhile it’s raining hard again 70 miles SE of us and 60 miles East. :rolleyes::mad::mad::mad:
 
Well what do ya know, our 10% chance of rain overnight has dwindled to a big fat zero. Meanwhile over east of us….:mad:

Not a drop……. For the most part, this has been happening since last July. I visited with my father-in-law and he said they’ve had 4.25” of precipitation since last July at their farm/ranch, and that includes 1.75” since the first of the year. Considering our average for the month of April is 6”, we’re in pretty rotten shape right now in this VERY localized area. This doesn’t include a couple 2” dry snows this winter of course. Additionally, it seems like we’ve been under a wind advisory every other day, which doesn’t help matters any either. We’re under another today. I’m afraid all the oaks we recently planted are already dying, I refuse to water trees in April and May, so that’s on me I guess.

We had a storm blow through Hays on Friday late afternoon. We baled out of the farm and stayed in town. Good thing we did as cottonwoods and elms lost a number of big branches. No rain accompanied it. Supposed to rain tonight with good chances all this week. We'll see.
 
300 miles south of you, raining again - raining every other day for next two weeks. River high and no fishing my bottom ground is flooded. Havent even been able to think about planting anything this spring. Us food plotters rarely happy with the weather.
 
Forecast looking great around Hays. Should help the tree seedlings and my milo test plot. Maybe we can get back to normal moisture this summer.
 
We’re under an areal flood watch right now and it’s coming down pretty good. Supposed to rain most of the day and night. It’ll take another hour or two of good rain to get much to the ponds. It’s raining more north of us, so hopefully the river will come up some and we can get after some blue cats!!
 
River is rising fast and I picked up a pretty good batch of river worms tonight. Blue cats here we come!!

We are right at 20” for the past two months. I wish our river would go down and get the water out of the woods where we can fish. I dont think there will be any turkey nests hatch this year. Crazy thing, after tomorrow, we are supposed to have highs in the mid 90’s for the next ten days - probably he start of a drought. Haha
 
Lookin at the forecast in SWMO looks like high 80's and possibly into the 90's this coming week. Hope the tap doesn't get turned off on us here.
 
Possible rain tonight in Hays area. I am sure my oaks need it badly. Have to try and do a trip to water those and perhaps more plot work soon.
