Drought and Survival

Still no rain for us. Got some in the forecast for tomorrow night but hopes aren’t high. I’m ready to plant WW and Buck Forage Oats but I’m gonna try to wait for damp ground and a promise of rain after if I can. If I can’t, I’ve planted in dry ground before, when it rains it will come up………if the dang hogs don’t eat it all.

This is by far the most encouraging forecast we’ve seen in a while. I’m going to do another small throw and mow this evening with some wheat, clover, and a weedeater.

Okie, it's supposed to come from the south, and its pouring down there around Houston right now. I hope it hits you first and keeps on coming!

I certainly hope so...I have halted my dozer work until we get some moisture in the soil because the powder dust is unreal and the soil won’t lay right because it like trying to pack talcum powder. I have been brushhogging the past few days but that carries a fire risk (flint and steel). I have been only working in areas with no rock. Our season opens Friday...don’t know when I will actually get to hunt this year :(

We ended up with 1.25” yesterday. There are good chances for additional rainfall Friday and Saturday. I hope the rest of you guys that need it are getting some rain as well.

Not a drop...it stayed just to our west in a line and gave the county over a really good rain but none here at all. I took the morning off to overseed some wheat and a little clover seed because they were showing we had a 90+% chance this morning :(

It has been very spotty so far, it's like strips of rain 8-10 miles wide coming from South to North. Prolly the most that has dropped so far is around 3/10s, but there's still good chances to come today and the next 3 days, unless they change that.

This drought we're in has shown me a first, according to the radar, a heavy rain and thunderstorm went right over the top of our farm. My weather app, which usually reads pretty conservatively, says we have received a half inch so far. I just talked to a buddy who drove by the farm and he said not a single drop had fallen, and the sky was clearing off. I guess the radar map is lying now... I'm going to go ahead and call it, no significant rain will fall in our area the next 3 days. The window for cool season grasses is shrinking, the frosts will come soon, I imagine ranchers will be selling cattle by winter's end in our area.
My father-in-law, who, like me, is known to exaggerate, has said this is the worst drought in his lifetime, much worse than '11 and '12. I can understand why he feels this way, because this has been so localized. When you see people getting ample rain merely a county away, and you cannot seem to squeeze even a drop out of the sky, it gets discouraging.

Yep...1 county over is doing great...not here though. I once had the same happen with a weather map. It showed a pouring rain (orange) right over our home. Only deal was I was home and not a drop fell...

Once again the “driest” portion of our state is getting nailed with heavy rains. Meanwhile the desert of SE Kansas is recruiting sw diamondbacks and horny toads to come make themselves at home.

I agree w those deceptive radars. I always blamed it on my rural mountains giving false readings but I guess it occurs any where. You would think w today’s technology they could count actual raindrops! I mean they can take a pic of you in the drive way from a satellite. Farm Log can sure lie.
I’ve gotten some rains followed by dry spells. Am planting grass this wk at the new house so I’m sure it will curse us all for some moisture.
Acorns are dropping giving clover a break. And I’m seeing my self planting brassica popping up again this year. I like this letting nature do the work. A lazy man I am. Good luck guys hope you get rain soon.

We got a little downpour for about 20 minutes and now like you said...the larger system to our west is starting to break up...what we got will settle the dust but made no puddles...

We’re getting a small thunderstorm right now but looking at radar, it ain’t gonna last long. Better than nothing I guess.

That stinks. I'm not very familiar with Kansas besides the flat wheat fields along I-70. Is SE KS a historically dry area?
Actually we average close to 40” a year typically. Not this year though. The above system gave us 1/10”…
Better luck next time I guess
