Well the pines thinning is finally done. Now we have days of cleaning up the rows we plan on planting and using. Slowly but surely the rake worked the area in front of the stand. Lots more to come.
Planted 50 chestnuts today. Big thanks to wbpdeerWayne for the chestnuts and all the advice. The old pool has cracks in the bottom so it will not hold water. They are bagged in my DIY weed barrier cloth bags we will see how they work. Also using our small chicken tractor to protect them from the tree rats.
Planted another 33 chestnuts yesterday inside under a light as a kind of control because the ones i planted outside haven't done much in almost 3 weeks they have been out. I know i just need to be patient and give them time. I'm just CDO....
Anyone planting mulberries? I trimmed up a buddies tree and got some cutting. Also trimmed his blueberries for cutting. And got some Loquat cutting from my brothers neighbor. http://www.nutrition-and-you.com/loquat-fruit.html I'm thinking the wildlife should enjoy them once they figure out what they are. The mulberries are tiny but produce a couple times a year down here. He planted his cutting that was abt 3' less than a year ago and its 20' tree/bush and tons of fruit.
Sam...Just catching up on your thread. Your pine thinning looks fantastic! Looks like you did more than just a 5th row thinning. You're gonna have an explosion of browse with the canopy opened up and soil disturbed. Post some pics about mid June looking into the pines.
Went out Saturday to do some turkey scouting and found that we had a trespassing issue again. This has been an on going fight for years. They cut path and harvest Dragon wood which is sold for making fake plants for home decor and bird perches. Anyone 20ft from a no trespassing sign they cut and 200yd trail into the woods harvesting 100s of 6-10' pieces of the wood. they even left a couple piles behind and the sting they were using to tie the bundles together. I called FWC and had them come out and look it over. They told me to setup and camera and try to get some pics. I put up some more signs and blocked off the path with some fallen branches.
Here is the turkey i was looking for on Saturday.
On a positive note. Here are some pictures of some cuttings of blueberries, mulberries, and loquats.
I had basically given up on the chestnuts sprouting this year and figured I had done something wrong. Went out this morning and found 2 had sprouted. I have been slammed busy this week and haven't had time to do anything much less check the plants well I should take more time away from the plants cause they finally decided to show me up. To say I'm excited is an under statement. I have that feeling when a shooter buck walks in and you cant sit still your so excited!
Glad to see your chestnuts starting to germinate and that the bucks are starting to show some growth. I haven't had any buck pictures in a long while...
