"Whitetail Hollow" - 90 Acres NE Oklahoma.

I was cutting hickory sprouts out of the fence along the road when the son in law of one of the neighbors stopped and got out of his vehicle and approached me with outstretched hand and a big smile.

His reason for stopping was to ask why I hinge cut the trees along the road but of course he did not know what a hinge cut was. He said it was none of his business but speculation is I am trying to hide something...of course he is right but what I am hiding is the view and to make deer/turkeys near the road to be concealed. I told him it was to open the canopy to allow the large oaks to thicken their crowns and to allow sunlight to the ground.

He asked me if I hunt and I told him absolutely and often when season is on. He told me he hunts the 37 acres near me his in laws own...

It was an awkward conversation...

Starting to sound like some of our neighbors. When anyone sees someone putting some time and money into something, everyone will know.

Yep...I am sure we are the talk of the area...oh well, will just carry on...

Broadcast 200 lbs of fertilizer on the south plot today because we were supposed to be getting a 2" rain this afternoon...it dissipated as it reached our county...not a drop!

It sounds like he got the message Okie. Its terrible but one has to be on his guard at all times. Your backyard field is gorgeous! I love it. The rock fields here grow some great crops as well. Its just harder to work is all.

Forester came out yesterday to look over our trees and come up with a burn plan and property plan for our place. He said we had some great trees to log in the area I am considering logging and that he could see the loggers being interested...the area is mostly white oak, red oak, post oak, and hickory with some really large Shortleaf Pine thrown is as well. He told me if I log it and he comes up with a wildlife/forest health plan that the state would provide the seedlings but I would have to provide the labor planting them. Looking at about 20-30 acres of clear cut...

We drove past south plot and the gobblers were strutting all over it and he about came unglued. He said his absolute favorite thing to do was turkey hunt and seeing all the toms dragging beard all over the place was almost more than he could handle. I was actually glad when they finally left while we were looking around so he could focus...lol...

Any concern about losing so many trees that provide so much food for the critters?

Yea, there is no working the backyard at all. It is 100% throw, mow, n grow with no spraying whatsoever because it has to be constantly vegetated to keep the little bit of soil between the rocks from eroding off into the holler...

Not at all because over 90% of our place is covered in the exact same trees and what we lack is thick cover. My neighbors have all of the same type trees other than the cow guy who cut all of his down many years ago and what is left the cows get the acorns when they fall. I am hoping to have some really thick areas once this is all done...

I planted the seed in an absentee neighbors head yesterday about the purchase of 10 adjoining acres...keeping fingers crossed because he is thinking about it as he already has a guy looking at it that I didn't know about. The property is not on the market and has no road access...

Neighbors sure can be funny, had my share of awkward conversations with a few. Good luck with the 10 acres, would be a great addition to Whitetail Hollow.

Dry, dry dry...high, hot winds certainly taking their toll...

Last rainfall...

As mentioned last time the drought is still ongoing...western and central Oklahoma got some nice rains yesterday but before it got to us in the NE it dissipated...

Walked out 10 acre property I had inquired to neighbor about...loaded with mature white oaks, red oaks, and pine with lots of structure ie hollows, ridges, benches...outlined in blue. Part of Our 80 is to the right in this photo and joins it directly...house in photo is my west neighbors...

A deal has been struck and 80 acres will soon be 90 acres

Glad to hear you are making progress on your land addition; Do you have good access along the upper line ?

Also yikes! That is some serious pollen. I've never seen pollen from trees build up like that.

Sorry the rain missed you. Depressing after planting all those seedlings. I was lucky enough to get around 3/4". Looks like the chances for tomorrow are now just scattered storms. Hope some find your seedlings

Hope you get some rain Okie. I'm sure you understand, but that pic of the oak regen is mind boggling. Can't even remember seeing that much as I'm sure its been decades for us. Big diff and pretty obvious on deer populations from you to me. I'm headed down to walk my place looking for apples and I bet I don't see that many on the whole place at least not without a browse line, on my whole farm. Love the crimson.

The 10 acres is the turkey roost and bedding area for a good portion of the deer using the area. The guy who had it unbeknownst to me said he has been trying to sell it to hunters because only access to drive to close is to that west neighbors house... I have a dozer road all along that west side so I can get to it with vehicle but I doubt I ever hunt it myself...buying it to keep Hunter encroachment down, preserve bedding, future select cut revenue, increase property value...

Pollen has not had any moisture to wash it away so a thick layer covers everything...have to wash windshields of our cars before every drive and hell on our allergies...

I hope so too Todd. Been a depressing spring which is supposed to be our rainy season...

You hit your planting just right to get a germinating rain...

Yes, we have a low deer population but apparently that makes for really big deer. I have killed my heaviest bucks ever off this property and they have the headgear to match!

I threw that Crimson seed out 3 years ago and it returns every spring even after tilling everything up and replanting the previous fall...very good for the pollinators!

Awesome you got the 10 acres. I have been talking to my non present neighbor who owns the ten by me about buying his. He knocked on the door two weeks ago and said he decided to build a house on it. They are clearing a spot now. Oh well.

Okie...Congrats on the addition to Whitetail Hollow. Hate it that you guys are in severe drought, especially this early. Last summer was just brutal down here with drought but glad to say it's back to normal this spring with average rains. Hoping you guys get some much needed rain!

We have not seen normal spring rains up here either but there's been enough. I always feel for you guys with properties in areas that go long periods without rain. But you always have a handle on things you can control, unfortunately the weather can't be one of them. The green plots you do have look great. And excellent news on the 10 acre addition. I'm going to start calling you Land Baron Johnny!
