"Whitetail Hollow" - 90 Acres NE Oklahoma.

Eli's deer story...

I picked Eli up after work last Thursday night and brought him to our house so we could get an early start. SE wind and upper 30's with a chance of rain moving in. The wind was perfect to hunt "home 10" and the last time it was hunted was in early October when I took Eli there for youth season. We got up at 4:00 am and had cereal then we got all bundled up and took the 30 minute drive to our other house.

When we got there the field was covered in deer so I drove around it to clear it so we could get into the stand without being observed. After that little chore we gathered our gear and walked to the double ladder stand using the light from our pole light to navigate. We climbed aboard and I made sure Eli has a good rest. A little after 7 we had 2 big does and a fawn come in. I told Eli to take the shot on the one on the left when he had her solid in the crosshairs and told him to remember where I told him to aim for center mass. Didn't take him long to fire and I could see blood on the does side when she ran. I knew it was mortal so we stated a while longer to see if I could get one.

About 15 minutes went by and the doe with triplets came in but she is off limits per my rules so we just watched them. They left after about 10 minutes so we got down and verified Eli's kill and then hunted a little while longer and then decided to take care of the doe because light rain had moved in.

Here is Eli with his doe. I know she doesn't look real big in this photo but she dressed out at 98 lbs which is real good for this area...

Pointing out the hit...

She only went about 60 yards total. Eli was using his H & R .223 single shot.

He was excited and we completed the paperwork in his tag and took the deer to be processed...

Got him up too early so he napped on the way home...

That afternoon we decided to go back to see if I could fill my antlerless tag. Eli and I were sitting in the same double ladder stand he took his deer from and we were hoping for a short hunt because it was pretty cold and breezy and with the light drizzle we were getting wasn't all that comfortable. A small yapping dog was running all through the woods where we expected the deer to come from so that stopped any action for the first 1.5 hours. After the little dog left I told my grandson that within 10 minutes we will see a deerand 8 minutes later the doe with triplets walked up and brought this doe with them...

Eli was amazed when the deer dropped in it's tracks when I shot.

The grandsons spent the night with us Friday night and their parents came Saturday for Christmas with us. This picture is one I took out the dining room window Saturday morning...

Sunday the wife and I went to the Warren Theatre with reserved seats in the Directors Lounge to see Rogue 1. First time I have ever been served dinner at my chair in a movie theatre.

Yesterday I decided to go across the road and do a little hinge cutting and looking around. I drove back to our north plot and was looking over an area I had hinge cut for screening near our north fence when I saw a guy with 2 small children and a rifle walking away from the fence just the other side of it. I hollered at him and he said they were leaving. I walked to the fence and he came over and the kids crawled through the fence like pros. He stood on the other side and told them to get back across. He told me he was hog hunting and the hogs use that fence as a run. I got his name and let him know we don't tolerate trespass.

He rents a house from my north neighbor. I suspect he and the kids crawled across and we're watching the north plot when I drove up and they sneaked back across the fence but I have no proof. When they left I put up more posted signs and hinged some hickory across the area they most likely crossed at. I will place a camera there this weekend...

Plot is wiped smooth out and trail cam shows large numbers of deer on it day and night...

Okie...I'm at home today catching up on all these threads and updating my own. Eli is learning from the best! Looks like the deer are keeping your plot mown down to dirt. Funny thing is we're just now greening up really good with all the rain we've had the past few weeks. Glad you caught the trespassers in the act. Hope it is a deterrent. It's weird how some folks think if they move to the country that all land is accessible.

Dang partner--you need bigger food plots. I'm sure though if we would have had normal rainfall here in Oklahoma this fall the plots would have been able to handle the browsing pressure better. Congrats to you and the little one on your doe harvests. i passed this year on the doe season; With two bucks in the freeze we have enough venison till next season.

I'm sure the neighbor got the hint!

Eli and his brother spent New Years Eve with us and he wanted to shoot so he shot his 20 gauge shotgun a good friend of mine gave him and he also shot my 30/30 for the first time. He is now 11 so I am going to move him up on his deer rifle from the .223 to the 30/30...

What I found this year with the plots is I don't have near enough ground planted. It's a challenge for me because our property only has 2 dozed openings of about 1 acre altogether and I am going to do away with 1 due to neighbor issues. The other is getting a bulldozer makeover either this month or next...

Thanks for looking!

Okie, do you have a stand big enough for You, Eli and his brother? Or will Eli be in stand on his own by the time brother starts?

Bigger food plot is the goal for 2017...waiting on the dozer to get an opening for us.

Eli and I got the last venison we need for the year. That boy can really go through the deer steak!

We missed another chance of rain today. Got a few sprinkles but that is it!

I am hoping the neighbor got the hint. He said he saw 15 hogs along our north fence at 11:00 one night last week. I think he was smoking something because my plotwatchers and 8 trail cams show 1 boar hog only and the sign concurs.

Happy new year Todd.

I hate it when folks can't do the right thing. This is dumped about 1/4 mile west of our place along the county road....

Grandsons came out for New Year's Eve and spent the night. The littlest one loves to ride in the back of my little puddle jumper truck to go across the road to the deer woods...here are the boys in now defunct north plot...

Today was the first day of habitat season on Whitetail Hollow. Here are the tools...

Here is the canvas...goal is a hinge cut screen that will create more of a buffer between south plot and the county road. Plot is already well out of sight but it is being expanded toward the road so I am being proactive...

I think I like habitat season almost as much as hunting season. Looks good to have the tools out. I bet the kiddos will be good help this yr! Good luck on your projects.

still got some ducks to kill then I will be out doing some habitat work. Head out early on my day off and call yotes then do some work.

After 6 tanks of gas in the Stihl MS170 I have an excellent 1000 foot screen!

This is the final part of a 3 part screen. The first level is a loblolly pine and cedar screen I planted spring of 2014. This is just inside our fence along the county road.

The next level is a dozer pile that is from where we dozed the trees down and in a line from the fence build and then a farm road was built on the north side of those dozer piles so it got trees from the south and north side sandwiched. This road I had built is also the fire break.

The next level is the hinging. Some in the dozer pile area but most just north of the farm road we dozed in...

Look closely and you can see the county road to the right and then the pine screen, then rotting down dozer piles turning into briars and such and then our farm road and then the new hinge cut screen.

I see the same crap here and we have free dump at landfill once a month. Can't understand it. You are a machine with the chainsaw. Made me feel guilty for being a lazy ass today. Of course I was hanging out with my son who leaves tomorrow. At least that's my excuse. Loved the tri level screen.

VERY,VERY NICE. That is an incredible edge now. It is becoming increasingly difficult for me to stay lazy watching what you do.
