"Whitetail Hollow" - 90 Acres NE Oklahoma.

On our own land deal...I got a quick hunt in yesterday evening. Saw nothing from stand and jumped 2 does on way out. Target still alive and well...

I really hope you get him. Do you think he's bedding on you?

He doesn’t bed on us...most of the deer don’t. Our neighbors have better bedding but we have most all of the food. I am attempting to get more bedding but it’s hard to break them of their normal habits and may take a generation or more to do it...

That's really nice to be able to get bucks to that age without having to worry about daytime bedding so much. You seem to have the right formula for your area. Good luck on getting another target down. I'm pulling for you.

Went to do a little job clearing some trees for a power line cut and the guy tells me...”oh BTW, can you make me a little building pad”. Ended up being 50’ x 200’ on the side of a ridge...lol

Thank you Steve...I had been borrowing laser levels, using actual levels and string lines up until a box my wife bought arrived on Christmas Eve...it was a Johnson laser level with all the trimmings so it made it nice to do this large of a pad. I have done pads for cabins, small houses, and pole barns but nothing of this magnitude. I was gauging my progress off of a 50’ x 150’ pad they were building not far from my home. They were building it in a hay pasture and peeled back the grass and top soil and brought in clay gravel. They had an excavator, 2 dump trucks, skid steer, bulldozer and a roller...they started 2 days before I did and they are still working on it...I gotta be doing something wrong...lol

Dozer is at next work location now...rain has moved in so I guess it will be Monday before I get to start that one...clearing an acre of woods and creating trails, clearing fence rows, and burning all the trees/brush.

Well on another note I have been patiently awaiting my target to start making some small mistakes. I hadn’t checked cameras in 5 days so I decided to do an afternoon sit yesterday at the tail end of the rain. Since it was pretty windy and still raining off and on and low 30’s I went to the food plot and climbed into the blind. About 5 pm 10 does and a small buck came into the plot and started tearing up the clover and a few minutes later a coyote pack lit up about 100 yards away so all the deer left. I waited a while longer and 2 young bucks entered the plot and then a 3rd young buck came in just before it was too dark to see. I left the blind and went home.

This morning it was mid 20’s and sometime in the night the sky cleared so everything was heavily frosted and everything wet had frozen. It was odd because we still had a 10 mph wind so it was a cutting cold. I put all of my hunting gear on and headed out to a stand near the 4 port Banks feeder down in the woods. I last filled it Saturday with 300 lbs so I figured it would be empty...I eased to the stand and to my delight nothing spooked which also verified to me that the feeder was empty. Squirrels started coming in before it was light enough to see and about 7:30 2 does came to the feeder and tried everything to try to get some corn out of that feeder. 1 was a really big and old nanny and I considered taking her but decided to just wait and see...they left and then I heard something to my west so I turned to see a dog going down the trail. 2 minutes later I heard barking and chasing to my south and here comes a young buck with a small black dog in pursuit. I recognized the dog as 1 of the dogs that lives at the end of the road about 3/4 mile from us. I stood up in my stand and hollered at the dog and stopped it so I waved my arms and it went back the way it came. I decided to get down and as I was getting down 2 of the dogs from the end of the road came up so I threw my cushion and some sticks at them and they went back the way they came. I figured the hunt was ruined for the morning so I grabbed my camera card on the way out...it showed on Christmas Day which was the last time I filled the feeder that my target came in that evening.

I thought back and that was a south wind so wouldn’t have been doable anyway. The next daylight visit was yesterday evening...when I was 200 yards from him in the plot...

Beautiful target buck Okie. Hope you get him. Nice dozer work too. Wish you were closer to me. I could use some good dozer work like that.

Did you refill it? Looks like he's ready for some more. No pictures of him on timed feeders?
They ate all of the corn that was in it by 8 pm last night...he came back by 5 times throughout the night checking it. He will be hungry this evening and yes I did refill it about 11 today. This afternoons hunt may be wet as we have a big rain moving our way that should be here by 4:30...

My timed feeders are in the open and he doesn’t like the open in daylight hours...

I think tonight is going to be the night. Good luck!

I wish it had been but at 4:20 the rain set in and with the 33 degree temps and 15-20 mph wind I headed in. Freezing rain falling now but it looks like tomorrow afternoon the rain stops so I will be after him again then!
I love days like that after rains and falling temps. Good luck!

Did you get any snow down there?Should be a good evening. Our season is closed except for antlerless which they have stretched out to being 24 days which makes no sense at all. There will be alot of shed bucks killed

No snow here but just west of us got quite a bit. It rained hard all night... our Holiday rifle doe season ended yesterday and our Oklahoma Facebook hunting pages are full of big bucks killed during that season...everyone claims archery but none of the photos have any type of bow in them. Online check in makes poaching easy here during those late doe seasons. I have personally had 2 people tell me they shot a buck because they didn’t get one during regular rifle season so the state owed them one and it was no problem because they could check it on an archery tag... I am so glad that season closed yesterday. Going to go out about 3 today...cold with a N wind...should be good!

I think those people would poach anyways. They are the same types that hunt during regular gun without a license or hunt muzzeloader without a muzzleloader. Fact is deer hunting for meat is becoming less popular than ever and with more and more clearing of country land the more they multiply. We can't put a dent in our herd of does, and bucks rarely live to be more than a spike. So with doe overpopulation comes a long doe season.

Doe population not the same everywhere...we have about a 1-1 doe to buck ratio here because the neighbors slaughter the does...
In Woodall we have about a 4:1 doe to buck...

You know if that buck only comes in on south winds you may have to trick him with a stand that makes him think he is safe but barely works for you, good luck
