What do you do if you're neighbors are better than you?

The new 40 I bought isn't even close to my main farm. There is really no reason for us to use the new 40 as trophy management when it's way behind our other stands. Perfect place for guests and guys who don't care about QDM. I'll personally still follow my personal rules because we only get one buck tag but there is no reason guests should is the neighbors are working for themselves.
Am I the only one who can't follow all of this?
I GUARANTEE you have already or/and will in the future affect hunting in that area "even with only 40 acres". If I remember right you were pretty excited about that property, why the turn around now?

Yes, but hummingbirds always start the most entertaining threads. Bull, I love your spontaneous, indecisive, impulsive passion for deer hunting and land management. I also enjoy how you think outside of the box.

I also subscribe to the notion that I wish all of my neighbors were better than me so long as they do it ethically. Unless they have 1000+ acres with a 200 acre sanctuary in the dead center of their property and high fences with one-way trap doors, I doubt it can do anything but help.
If they truly are better overall, find/create something that you do better, even if it's just one aspect and do it even better than you already are. Early food = kill them early... better bedding you can get them to or from. Use their property to an advantage and be ready for them to travel.

Every time I read "beating" and replace it with "feeding" it makes more sense! Your neighbors are feeding you. Lots of us wish for a large neighbor with good qdm habits. If you got the deer early season and they got them late season, you're neck n neck if we must use competitive terms. I see only what I'd call seasonal shift, or ordinary pattern changes.
You sound like the most ADD person I've ever met. You just need to set a goal and stick with it.
The deer don't know if they are on your property or the neighbors. Provide something the neighbors don't offer and I guarantee the big bucks they are growing will show up on your land.
Lowering your standards because your neighbors are "winning" makes no sense to me.

It sounds like you've gone in with a flurry of activity and spooked the older bucks off for a while. Was it surveyed before you bought it, did you go explore they place and look for deer sign, check fence and borders, set up stands, clear lanes, make trails, set up trail cams (You were going to order 6 camera's for 40 acres? I hunt 950 acres without a single camera on it. They are too invasive and cause too much disturbance.), etc.
If the neighbors are growing big deer, they will cross the fence from time to time. If you are going in all the time they have to get use to it, or just avoid your activity.
As others said; if you don't really care about it lower your standards and go have fun. If you do care about 140+ bucks then it sounds like something needs to change. I would guess disturbance needs to be reduced, but it's hard to tell from a forum.

The chase is the fun part guys. You're right, I will never stop chasing and trying to get better.
Don't misunderstand. I like having this 40. It's just a different game when your neighbors are better than you are. It really makes you think how to get more deer to spend more time on your property

Small parcel surrounded by good managers sounds like a dream situation for anyone focused on mature animals. All the benefits with less work and investment on plots etc. Sounds like you win to me and a situation where you can achieve your goal of 150's. Is your 40 located within these larger parcels or at the end of a block of cover or something that does not lend itself to "their" bucks using it as part of their core area?
One thing I'm certain of: 1 year of data is not near enough time to determine its potential.

I am a small landowner (80) surrounded by smaller landowners on all but one side. I am the guy who is doing everything I can to try to grow and hold or at least have the big deer use our place. My neighbors who do absolutely nothing but run corn feeders on small 10 acre parcels killed the 2 biggest deer I had on cam this year. Those bucks do not use the feeders but the does do and when the does go to one the bucks will be nearby sniffing around during the rut. If you have some food to hold a few does then bucks WILL be there at one time or another...
Hold some does on that 40 and you will have a chance at the biggest buck in the area at one time or another...if you are there... Like has been said before the deer don't know who's place they are standing on...

Couldn't agree more!, Bull, I believe if you can get does to call your property home you will have opportunities to take some of what your neighbors have grown. I would never lower your standards since you have 140's plus around you. They will cross your fence, give them good reason to.
Be realistic on how many mature deer one can shoot off of a 40. One or two I think are possible from what you describe of the area and you missed one during rifle. Next year will be better, you'll have a better idea of where to place stands, stand entrances, etc. To throw a match on the whole thing is crazy but you do crazy pretty well.
On a small parcel such as a 40 pressure is key. If you plug a bunch of your friends and such there to sit, odds will get real long in a hurry on seeing anything that is mature, especially if they pop younger deer early, sightings will greatly diminish.
Or become "that guy" you despise and talk about on the forums around your other property that shoots all that you passed that you knew had great potential.

Jeesh I wish I had this problem, good deer management neighbors what?! my neighbors shoot deer during the summer at night, kill the smallest things alive ect

Which landowner are you? It appears you are one manager in location A and a different manager in location B.
Too much activity to close to season my have moved the bucks off your 40 acres. If you do the things that attract deer / does on the 40 acres then the mature bucks will begin to use the ground.
Your neighbors have not beat you. They have worked at improving their land for numerous years. You are the new kid on the block.
Kabic is right - this is not a competition. Kubota is right the bucks will seek the does - it is in their DNA.

Sounds to me like it's a system issue Bull. Your. Hunting. Process. It seems to me your having the same results/issues on this 40 that you do on your other property. It's coming close to the definition of insanity..... can't expect different results
Just recreate what they have and link up your land to there's. Enjoy the fruits of there success in growing them with yours. Simple enough....
You got a harvest opportunity at a 140" on 40 acres.... sounds like a win to me for the year..... even if it was a miss
