The Farm - Madison County, GA

You’re lucky. The older I get the MORE I obsess and worry about stuff like that. Because after a heart attack at 47 you realize you ain’t got that many “tomorrow's“. I live with too much of a sense of urgency I guess.

Not a bad picture of the Dead Buck Walking. Neighbors will enjoy this one. If I had to bet, he'll get killed by the one person who has spent the least amount of time over there, the least amount of money, and the least amount of effort. He'll walk right out in front of him in a hunter-assisted suicide.

One of the natural sauls (white x chestnut) oaks on the farm has a few acorns this year. I think these are really neat trees. Leaves that are broad like a chestnut oak but with deep indentions like a white. Acorns the size of chestnut oak, but sweetness of white. Bark that looks like a perfect combination of the two.

Really pretty colors on the acorns too. They start green, then turn yellow, then reddish, then brown. Huge, too. And deer love them. Gonna be a race to collect a few.

Looks like some does need to take a ride on a tailgate....juss sayin'!

Hopefully you are getting some of this rain coming through. We might get 3-4" out of it with more on the way next week. Looks like about time to start getting serious about putting plots in.

You don’t like fox squirrels? I love them and am managing my pine plantations for them. They can be hard on plastic feeders though.

LOLOL. Yeah THAT would be bad news. There are bears that pass through that part of the state from time to time but we haven't seen one. Our bane is wild hogs, though fortunately they haven't took up permanent residence on us yet.

Grown another one for the neighbors to kill. Taking on bets on how long it takes them. I say before Thanksgiving for sure.

Well, I would have made bank on that. Actually only took til yesterday. Fortunately it was my good buddy right next to me. Due to family issues he hasn't been able to spend ANY time on his place, nor plant food plots, nor work til his fingers bled in 100+ degree heat. LOL. All he had to do was show up yesterday and sit for 25 min and this buck couldn't WAIT to commit suicide. I really am glad my buddy got him because it means a lot more to him than me (I would have been disappointed) but damn it, why is it every decent buck I grow is hell-bent on walking out on someone other than me. Since season opened on Oct. 12 I have seen 84 deer in my limited hunts. I have seen EVERY SINGLE buck I had on camera----except this one. Triple C and I were discussing we love working our land, but the fact is all the work you do is wasted if you don't own 50,000 acres. In the state of Georgia if you produce a decent buck, you can bet someone else is going to kill him. About to the point I ain't gonna do it no more. Cheaper to pay somebody in Kansas $4000 a year to kill a buck someone else grew.

Are black squirrels common around you? We have a city called Goshen here in Indiana that is full of them. They’re starting to spread now too. I saw a black squirrel in our county for the first time this year.

Black fox squirrels are. Not black phase grey squirrels. Never seen one of those here. Seen several at Niagara Falls.

You raise some nice bucks there LLC, way to share and honestly share joy that your buddy got him. I get as much if not more happiness out of my friends and family getting a deer off our place than I do when I get one.

Congrats to your buddy! My neighbor just killed the biggest buck (that I'm aware of) on our property this weekend. Same as last year, on a .4 acre plot with a corn feeder. But, he's a great guy and I'm glad he's shooting mature deer instead of one of the little ones we have running around.

Yep. With a 3 month long firearms season, 2.5 and 3.5 yr olds are mostly dead on their feet in high pressure hunting counties. I've been at it since 2011 and still love watching them grow. But, I do get a bit discouraged at watching the young bucks disappear over the course of a season. Congrats to your buddy on a fine buck Tommy. Like you, I get more pleasure out of family and friends taking a deer than me pulling the trigger. I still enjoy watching them from the stand. I sat at the end of this plot this past Saturday afternoon and watched the boys in full chase patrol dogging does all over the plot. That's me between his antlers sitting in the tree. I look like an orange blob. Had a recurve in my hand so they weren't in any danger.Buck chasing.jpg
