Pinetag's Plot - 43 acres in Virginia

Last little project before the season. This ditch is right along the river and I have to cross here if I want to avoid going toward the inner sanctum of the property. It tends to back fill from the river when we have lots of rain making it difficult to cross and not get wet feet, unless you want to bring along hip waders, so I decided to build a little walking bridge. It's mostly leftovers from my shooting backstop and then a few additional 2x4's I picked up last week. I've still got some cross braces and a couple more steps to add and then once things are dry enough I will add some grip tape in between each step and finally cut off any hanging edges. I built something similar for a dog ramp and it worked out well.

Also, food plots are popping fast. We've had a couple inches of rain over the last week so germination is good. I know this is kind of early but last year we had a really dry spell in Sep and early Oct and by the time the rain came the leaves were dropping and filling in all the bare spots and smothering out the seeds. Hopefully I get some thick, lush plots this go round. The second pic is where I was filling the hand seeder and had some spill over.

Finished the walking bridge today. I also decided to make railings coming down the steep hill to make going up and down a little easier with gear as well as easier for my wife and daughter when they come out for hikes. I knocked out the first railing right before I had to head home, but I still have one more to go and then check two stands and I'll be staying out of the woods until bow season in Oct. Can't wait for cooler temps and sitting in a tree!!

Looks good. Always a good thing to have a hand hold. Not sure if you ever hiked Zion or Yosemite but they have these chains fastened to posts buried in solid rock to hold on to for nearly vertical climbs or narrow ledges. Makes for some puckering moments passing hikers going opposite direction on a 2 ft wide ledge. Anyways, your work reminded me of that. My wife would probably just say I'll see you when you get back!

Funny you mention those hikes...we were actually planning a trip to Glacier Nat'l Park this year but had to cancel due to my wife having a reoccurring foot issue. They have some passes there with similar chain/rope handholds for the narrow sections.

This little spot can get slippery after a rain so I'd rather have the hand rails while toting guns/scopes. My ML scope somehow got bumped last year and it cost me one of the biggest bucks I've ever had an opportunity at shooting!!

Finished up the remaining to do's before the season. I got the last section of railing put in, cleared the remaining debris/trees from my trails, checked the last few stands, put up two mock scrapes, seeded some oats and ladino in my food plots, replaced camera batteries, and cut grass. I won't be setting foot on the property until at least opening day of bow (Oct 3).

And I am getting lots more turkey pictures this year! First year I owned the place (2018) I only got a couple turkey pics in total and I saw just two during the season. They are becoming regulars in my food plots now. I like the pic with both deer and turkeys in it.

Well, I haven't hunted opening day of bow in a few years but the weather was cool enough that I went looking for an early season doe this morning. The day started off pretty rough as I was running late, got busted by a doe when I was about 60 yards out from my stand which would have put her within shooting range and with enough light had I been on time, and then I realized I was missing a glove when I got settled in (found it beside my truck when I came out). It turned out ok though with a pair of does sighted at about 7:45 just over the property line sneaking to the south, and a small buck at 8:30. He had a spike on his right side but a funky left side that protruded straight out in front of his forehead. I didn't get a very good photo unfortunately as the leaves were damp and he was on top of me before I knew it. I'll give it a couple weeks and wait for the next cold front to come through before heading out again, but it was nice to be out in a tree again!!

Place is looking good!

I remember crossing creeks on a 4 or 6" Pipe the Gas Company put in when I was a younger man. Now I need something much better to attempt a crossing or simply get wet feet.

Actually one of the Crossing was 3 sections of Pipe they put side by side and I think maybe welded together. It made a surprisingly good Walk Over Bridge that we used for 20+ years.

Yea, I've never enjoyed wet feet when on stand...chalk that up to a few mishaps when I was younger. So I put in a little hard work before the season so I can enjoy dry feet during the season. LOL

Like clockwork, bucks are almost non-existent on my place until about mid October. Big boys are still about a week away, but these are some promising 2.5 year olds.

Bigger bucks are starting to cruise now too. Check out the neck on this joker!

This tall, tight rack reminds me of a buck I got one pic of last year toward the end of summer, but not certain.

Well fellas, I underestimated the power of water yet again. We have been saturated here lately and last Thur/Fri we got 2.5" of rain and the river just came out of the banks. No harm to my creek bridge but the little walking bridge over the ditch needs to be re-positioned. Hard to believe that ditch water moved it, but I guess I'll learn one of these days. Looks like about a foot of flooding based on the mud at the bottom treestand step. Can only get the one picture to load right now.

Well that stinks, at least it didn't wash it out!
True, and it was lightweight enough for me to turn it upright on my way out this evening. I'll figure out how I want to secure it after the season.

Here's some more pics after the flooding. The deer like this bridge for crossing the creek as much as I do.
