2019 Live from the Stand

Forgot to log hunt in real time or get pictures but jack connected on nice freezer doe. 105 pounds. Perfect shot with a new to us Ruger 243. Love it when a plan comes together. Robert had nice buck out late but not enough light for shot

Now we have picture

Chuck says it was a slow day on the ridge. Several does, a button buck, and a fork horn were all he saw.

We saw couple does way off, but no shot. We chose to hunt Mandy Sunday afternoon. As we rode to the stand I asked Jack "What is the worse thing about having multiple locations to hunt?" He was puzzled. Finally we agreed that it was bad because you could choose the wrong stand. I also said it could be worse that you had cameras at other stands. Well,,,,,while we were watching does at Mandy these guys were 50 yards from a shooting house at the Bull Pen. Shucks....we will try again!

I hunted this morning but it wasn’t very lively and I’m figuring the rinse and repeat is getting a little boring. I did however, see the prettiest coyote I’ve ever seen. He was colored like a wolf, with a dark back and sides and lots of white on his legs and chest. He never gave me a shot, but if he had I’m certain he would have wound up as a full bodied mount next to my black one.

Congratulations to young Jack! It is just a matter of time before you guys put yourselves where the bucks decide to pop out that particular day!

Coyote are my next focus...it will have to be after our rifle season though that will begin this Saturday and run for 2 weeks. Only hunting on our place during that time will be my wife and grandson whenever they choose to do so. I am going to go with them to video and will do a little border patrolling...going to try my hand at trapping them this year along with raccoons. Good luck with your deer hunting!

In the “low rent” blind this evening. Light rain in the 40’s with a south wind in my face. Looking for a monster for the wall.... have no idea if he is out there, but it beats sitting on the couch! This is where my son shot his buck Sunday evening. Overlooking g a small bean plot with some CRP and a creek in the distant tree line.... we will see what happens.

Coyote trapping is pretty easy with minimal expense. Your biggest problem trapping them in big timber setting is coons fouling up all your dog sets. I've caught 8 in the last 4 days.

I have found that if you have a lot of problems with coons and opossums getting in your canine set. I go out and set a lot off dog proofs first and target them and get them out of there. I have a lot less problems with my sets getting messed up by non targets. I also use heavier pan tension for my coyote sets. This keeps the opossums from tripping the set. I know a couple guys in the south that manage a lot of land for deer. They grow some giant bucks for the south and predator removal is part of their process and they always target the critters that will mess up the sets first. they put out some traps around the coyote set in locations that non targets might come from to potentially catch the non target before it gets to the canine set.

Set snares for yotes along their pathways, problem solved. They tend to follow same pattern on a tract of land.

Back at it again today. I haven't heard any dogs running or shots yet which is good news, but I suspect daytime movement has probably slowed quite a bit. Trying to keep realistic expectations but maybe I'll get lucky and catch some late rut activity.

I don't have any problems catching coyotes I catch between 50 and 100 a year. Just saying if you trap in the timber you have to deal with bycatch. I don't trap Big Timber, in my area it's mostly AG. I have no problem catching coyotes in fence rows and out in the open where my raccoon catch is minimal.

Finally made it home from work. Been waiting for my little girl to get out of school. We hit the woods as soon as we could change. Sitting on an old loading deck I affectionately named the Upper Deck. Plot just now starting to show some life (which is perfect timing). Note to self. I need bigger blinds now that the kids are hunting too. Wish us luck.

I’m in the stand as well. It’s a beautiful afternoon in the upper 50s with a mild N wind. Saw a nice buck with a screwed up right main beam earlier and just had a for walk by. I should have shot her but I wasn’t paying attention.
