2019 Live from the Stand

All deer will be better next year , and the next, and the next....except the ones the neighbors get
Not true...I had a buck using our place for years I called “Bully”...he was so old he had less rack every year and I guess he finally died last winter...

Got in this morning and a few minutes after I got settled a small buck came in and worked the mock scrape right in front of me. I could just make out his antlers in the scope.

Lots of activity so far on this cold morning. A front came through yesterday and it's in the 20's right now. Just had two deer spook down in front of me about 100 yards out and a big doe came running right up to me while the other went off to my left. A minute later I found out why. A lone coyote came trotting in and then turned and headed off through the pasture.

Ended up being 3 decent sized does in total. They worked their way right back in front of me. Should have some good pictures on the game cam.

Frosty start to a beautiful day here in Clay Co. Chuck has had does under his stand before daylight so maybe they'll be moving today.
I'm being serenaded by several screech owls at the moment.

Not sure how well this will show up, but Chuck just has two otters pass through the food plot.
There have to be a million snow geese from the sound of it in the rice fields west of the ridge today.

Yesterday morning hunt...I left for my stand from the house at 5:15 and snuck to my newest stand set that I placed due to its location between a high draw buck area of 3 different white oak groves and our south plot which is a high doe draw area. This is always the last point I can get to safely without deer busting out in the morning and is also a place where the deer skirt a deep head of a hollow.

Here is my target deer skirting that hollow in front of that stand.

It was a cold 26 degrees and clear and we had a major frost. I had concerns with this recent ladder set possibly not being settled and possibly creaking in the cold on ascent but to my delight it did not make a sound. As it got lighter I was looking around and picking out trees that needed to be trimmed to make it a great bow stand. I like the fact I step directly off the logging road into the stand with no travel across the woods at all. I can vaguely see the food plot about 80 yards from my stand and I could make out deer running around the plot chasing each other.

A bit later I see 3 does traveling up a finger out of the creek bottom feeding on white oak acorns on the way to the plot.

They entered the plot and a few minutes later I saw some deer going from the plot along the edge of a small area I clear it 2 years ago with my chainsaw down into the creek bottom. I then heard a deer walking directly behind me which ended up being the same 3.5 yr old 8 pointer from the day before. I watched him go west toward our newest 10 acre acquisition. 5 minutes later I watched a very nice up and comer 9 point come up out of the creek bottom and the steam coming out of his nose made him look like a bull. He headed along a path that took him around through the woods on the west side of the plot so he could check the does without entering the plot. 15 minutes later I watched 4 does feeding on acorns moving from north to southwest and then 20 minutes later a 4 point buck came from the north, circled behind me and went to the plot...all told I saw 3 bucks and at least 10 does.
The wind switched from NE to SE while I was there and then went S and SW. I didn't Hunt yesterday afternoon so I used the time to used my landscape rake on my tractor to clear leaves off my trails and trim up around my new set because rifle season begins 2 weeks from today and I wanted to make sure everything was in order in case I am still hunting then. Per wind next hunting may not happen until Monday and may be from my blind because we have a major cold front with rain, sleet coming Monday with temps in the teens. Another great hunt here on the farm!

Yesterday afternoon cold steady NW wind w rain and snow day before had things perfect quiet for Still hunt. Worked way up steep ravine to sneak to work same East west ridge of previous post on opposite end. Stalked to within 40yds of shooter 8 and his Ho but she caught movement and JST wouldn’t let go. He could care less as he had luv on his mind. I shoot recurve practice 40+yds but no way in brushy wood. She finally decided they should go to her place and they drifted off.
Decided climb stand near spot. 7 bucks w 2 shooters and 1 doe for cold windy sit. Tried my best at full draw to take another 8 less than 20 yds but he jst wouldn’t slow down w his nose to ground chasing Tush. Wheel bow take shot but no way for me w this 160fps bow.
Back to same ridge still looking for my 10. Should I take the wheel bow and open up more possibilities?? Naw I don’t think so. Good luck everyone cold has them moving.

Here's the little guy that came in this morning right at first light (timestamp is off cause of daylight savings). Always cool to get one on camera at the same time you're in the stand. Evidently I should have been in this stand 2 days ago though.

Got a hall pass. I informed the warden that we are down to 1 pack of ground and a few roasts she agreed that I should get in the woods. She also reminded me that if I hadn't missed last month this wouldn't have been an issue. In a climber on a crossroad in the woods that we call the fjord. There is an old pond to my left that drained and there are almost vertical sides for about 70 yards. It works as a pretty good funnel. Hoping to see something tonight.

Oohhhh! She shifted the blame! Your warden is scary!

2nd hunt of youth weekend. My little girl up to bat trying to connect on her very first deer. She was raring to go this morning at 5am. We couldn't hunt long since we had cheer early. None the less. We saw a doe and a fawn. We're sitting on the back 40 over a reclaimed logging deck that I just planted in wheat, clover and turnips. A little late in planting but I've planted as late as Thanksgiving with good success. We just got our first hard freeze last night.

She's tryin to one up her brother by killing a buck for her first deer. Wish us luck.

Well saw a 4 on the right side buck left side broke off. Didn’t pull the trigger. Merle was busted by a doe this morning and saw a little buck this evening. Otherwise was a bust today.

Didn’t hunt this morning, volunteered to be an Uber driver for my wife. I hunted this afternoon and saw nothing save one big red looking coyote. At first I thought he was coming to see me until he stopped, looked up the ridge into the woods and turned around to go back the way he came. He finally stopped at 300/325 yards and I sent a Hail Mary in the form of a 140 grain Sierra Pro Hunter but I missed. Dang it !

I enjoyed y’all ‘s hunts though !:)
