very nice, how did you fasten them to porch?Pin from bottom?Do you have to treat them at all or just let them dry out first
4 4" coated deck screws toenailed around the base of each and the uppers are have the same amount but screwed straight down through the treated 2 x 6...

The bark will be peeled after it loosens a bit and the post will be sealed. There is more stuff happening with the post so stay tuned...

I had a chance to measure out the plot expansion today since I worked on it all day getting the roots and other clean up done. Looks like the south plot went from about 6/10's of an acre to right around 2.2 acres... I am real happy about that...

Looks like you're taking advantage of this Spring weather to get lots of work done. That deck will provide hours of enjoyment; nice job Johnny.

It was 22 last night and 27 when I got started this morning. I cut up several large post oaks that had to go due to the plot expansion and hauled the wood back to the house. Then I started using my landscape rake on the expansion smoothing and getting the roots and sticks raked out of it...after I got that done I put my spreader on and put down WR grain and red clover seed...I finished the day out with a bunch of hinge cutting...really great day!

Whew, I got tired just reading about it!

Got started this morning around 8:30 and 31 degrees. First thing I wanted to put the last of my clover seed down and drag it in. I ran the Barduro Red clover through my 3 point spreader with the WR grain...worked great. I then spread 8 pounds of Durana White clover by hande and since I don't have a formal drag this country boy makes do...

After I got the seed all dragged in with the tree top drag I decided to try to get a photo of some of the expansion to show how much we changed the south plot. I went to the east end of the plot on my tractor and raised the bucket and climbed up to it to get these pictures...everything green is the original plot...

After that I took a 2 hour break to look for sheds. I found 5...

I then burned the leaves out of a small section of trees I am cutting to prepare the area for another pine grove...

Yea this year is just a little construction, plot expansions, gravel, shop pad, firewood cutting, hinge cutting, seeding, and tree planting so far. My tree order should be in this week or next...lots to do before I get too old to do it anymore...when I retire I just want to do a little maintenance with all of the projects actually completed and to be able to just look at the mostly grown trees I planted and pick fruit from the orchard...several years until that day though...

How was your deer season?

Ha ha, you? Retire? I can't picture the old OkieKubota ever retiring. Completed projects? Are they ever really completed? LOL I hear you though. I can retire from my day job in twelve years. Hoping to have the major stuff done and just be enjoying it like you said.

How was your deer season?

My tag soup didn't taste very good but it was the best season yet on the farm as far as daylight mature buck sightings. Just couldn't make it happen. I hunted very hard for two weeks in November and I saw two of my three shooters just three days apart. Close to coming into bow range, actually had my number one buck at forty yards but he never walked through a shooting lane. The other buck came in behind me and I expected him to walk to my left like all the other deer that have ever walked by that stand have done. Well, he's big for a reason and he went behind me. When I slowly looked to my right to see where he went, he was looking right up at me. I swear his face said, "Oh, I was just checking to see if someone was in that stand." He walked off before I could get turned around with my bow. Exciting nonetheless.

I figure I have about 15 more years to work if Social Security is still solvent at that time since I will be 67 and that is my full retirement age for SSA and the land and house will be all paid off then so with 2 retirement checks from 2 employers, an Employer matched TSP and a personal savings and SSA we should be Ok. I married a younger wife who will still be working a few more years after I am retired . We didn't get our land or house until after I was 50 so I am behind the younger gen in that aspect but I enjoy my work and 15 years will fly by all too soon...

Your season sounds exciting and you are correct he does and small bucks will file right in front of you but the big mature bucks will take a route that will be making you scratch your head but that is how they got old...I seem to remember the monsters that got away more than the actual harvested deer. I have dreams (or is it nightmares) about some of the "almost" deer...

Sounds like you have a solid plan, I'm not surprised. Hopefully the good Lord will bless us with many more years of health and blessings to see the day to enjoy it.

Yeah those deer teach me something every season, I figure the day I quit learning is the day I'll hang it up. I seem to inch a little closer each year. Hopefully this year, season five of ownership, will be the year.

Thinking of doing a clearcut of about 20-30 acres of our ground. In this area I will allow all trees to be taken other than the large pines...This will mean red oak, white oak, post oak, and hickory. There are a lot of large white oak trees in this area and I believe many will be quality trees. The reasoning behind this is because the land along our boundaries draws deer to the edges instead of the core. My plan is to create very thick bedding areas that are fairly impenetrable as they grow up and the main source of mast will be the center of our property. This will also give us an income to do some other improvements on the property. I spoke with the local forester this morning and he said they were too short handed to do a timber grade or TSI plan with me and just wanted to send me to some logging companies.

I really want to get with someone who is not biased to a specific logger and is not the person who is actually buying the timber because I want to get the best possible price for quality trees all the way to pulpwood. Anyone have any other ideas on who to talk to? I am in NE Oklahoma.

The place is looking really good. I like how the porch is turning out, the barn is awesome, and you have some major changes to the structure of your property going on. Going to feel like a whole new place in a yr from now!

Nice little batch of sheds you found. I checked my trail camera last weekend and of the 6-7 buck I had pics of only 1 had dropped an antler. Last night my boys saw two bucks in the yard and they both had both sides too. I guess it isn't time for me to start looking yet.

It is definitely changing for sure! I have to pinch myself sometimes to see if this is for real...less than 5 minute walk to big bucks and in November even less than that!

Backyard rock plot clover and rye grain coming right along again...not bad for being sewn into a dozed off flint rock ridge slope that is our backyard...
