The Shed

Good to see some central WI hunters!...not far from myself just county or 2 over. Sauk county is a great county, bucks can get really big around there. Hopefully CWD doesn't ruin that area, IA & Sauk county #s are starting to get high in small pockets. Definitely a Cleary building they always look awesome.

I would have said at first glance of just the rack without a good belly photo 2.5 year old for that area and just going off what i normally see by me, that area soil is very rich and some good genetics rolling around, to see a 130" 2.5 year old is not overly uncommon. Small brows like that would also lead me to think 2.5, 3.5 is possible.

Should be a nice property
Tell me how CWD works? We supposedly have it here in our area in PA but nobody that I know of has seen any evidence of it.

I'll make no claim to be a scientist or biologist. but here's what i know, as it something i pay close attention to and i hope i don't open any can of worms on this site as everyone has an opinion. But can see this link below where CWD is tested positive and pretty easily to realize where the epicenter of it started and i wish i had a link of this same map 10 years ago, was much smaller in these areas and has continued to expand outward. As for its impact yet, i know few buddies of mine hunting down in those areas where it more prevalent and they have not noticed it like you said, but also have to remember the % of deer likely infected is probably hard to notice quite yet, as deer herds down in that area are almost overpopulated.

CWD originated in Colorado and has been there for 50yrs. It's scary stuff but the truth of the matter is that it hasn't come close to destroying the herd in CO. I don't wish disease on any population, and maybe I'm being optimistic... but look at where it's been the longest to get an understanding of what the future might hold for it's spread.

New box blind in progress. Trying LP Smartside panels this time instead of plywood. Hoping to reduce the weight a little bit.

How big is that blind? 4x4? I built a larger 4x8 one on one of my main plots so I could have my kids sit with me comfortably. Id like to put up another on another plot but for just one person as a second option to sit out of the elements.

yes each wall is 4’. I did it slightly different than I usually do. I usually make it so 4’ wide sheets of plywood are the outside dimensions. This time I made all 4’ wide walls so there is more room inside. Platform is 4’x6’.

Planted some apple trees from St Lawrence Nursery this weekend.

1 Liberty
1 Freedom
1 Winter a Wildlife Crab
1 All-Winter Hangover Crab
1 Chestnut Crab

Got them matted and caged. Only took one pic of the two by the future gardens. Other three went on the opposite end of the property for hunting purposes.

Parents bought a tiller for the little JD tractor they got last year. We got it adjusted for the depth we wanted and opened up 3 areas that were previously garden by former owners. Can’t wait to try it out this summer on some brassica plots.

Also managed to move a stand and put up another this weekend. Both should be greats spots after learning a lot (hopefully) last year.

I am impressed by the looks of the roots on your tree shipment. I've gotten many trees that looked like the were ripped out of the ground and chopped on with a hatchet. Of course, the type of tree makes a difference too, crabs often have nice looking root systems, maybe that's why they always seem to start easy. Your wire cages look great too.

The SLN crab roots were definitely not like these. They were very unimpressive but I think that’s an antonovka root issue. I couldn’t get an answer when I asked NWC what kind of rootstock they used. These were impressive so I’m willing to gamble a bit. The only trees I’ve planted without knowing what the rootstock was.

These aren’t at The Shed property as I just planted the first apples there about a month ago. These are at our river bottom land we’ve had for thirty years. These trees are anywhere from 4-12 years old. All 29 flowered this year. First time that has happened.
