I finally remembered to take a picture “down” my hillside. This may show some of the elevation better. To the left (North) is my 1.25 acre food plot behind the trees. To the right (South) is the brome field that will hopefully be converted to food someday. You can see some of the grasses that are coming in and the tree line to the North will be supplemented with additional cedars. It’s been a lot of work. Used to be totally canopied. The map shows where the picture was taken from.

Well, last Friday I tried to go shed hunting in the morning. Got tied up in an old barbed wire fence.... That sucked... 5 stitches in the knee...

What didn’t suck was dragging my leg around while I walked 3 miles on Sunday and matched up a shed I found three years ago!!! Some of you may remember a write-up I did on a big 8 pointer my dad killed in December 2016. The shed in my right hand is his drop from the spring of ‘16. The antler in my left hand is the match I found Sunday! Three years! Haha! What are the odds?!

Nice find! I found a shed last weekend from a buck I killed 3 yrs ago. Had to have been sitting there for 4 yrs and didn't have a single chew mark on it.

Been pretty slow around the farm. My rye went nuts with all the rain we’ve gotten.

I mowed that about 8 inches high in between rains to terminate and maybe let the clover get some sun. My fear is that the thatch is too thick... The residue hasn’t dried down at all because it has pretty much rained every day since I cut it.

Had this little guy move through the area. Taken from my dad’s house which is a half mile from me. I saw one tornado in my first 32 years on this planet. Have had two near misses in the three years since...

We added a second bedroom and pantry. The “garage” was never really a garage anyhow.

The bad news is the half of my food plot that got the added compost doesn’t seem to be able to grow much.

I am not sure if it is still too “hot” or what exactly is going on. We have it worked down to a good seedbed again and gonna give it another go. I talked with the guys at Greencover Seed and they helped me put together a mix that should be beneficial all around.

Like the tour! Did you have any luck last fall? We used to hunt one week a year near Beloit on some farming friend’s ground. Haven’t been for a few years now and I miss it for sure. We have some good sized deer here in SEK, but they can’t compare to the necks on those NCK brutes!

If they were ever sprayed, it was more than 15 years ago. And to be honest, the field it came from is solid weeds, so I can't understand why they won't even grow. I added lime and gypsum to see if that will have any effect. We'll see.

I didn't get a buck. I'm in a little bit of a funk right now. The property we have hunted my whole life is up for auction this fall. We sure can't afford it, and all the potential buyers come with outfitters attached, so I guess its the end of an era for us... Being a great neighbor only gets you so far...

I understand completely, that's the way of things in Kansas now it seems. Stay after it though, there are still a few people out there who will let locals hunt.

Well, about two weeks ago we had to disc the plot again. I had broadcast 100 lbs. of gypsum on this 1/2 acre. The weeds had gotten pretty big, but not a seed was found so we turned them under. I cultipacked the plot and broadcast a mix I got from Green Cover. It had a couple types of clover, turnips, radishes, and oats. Cultipacked again and prayed for rain. After dodging a few good rains, we finally got a good 3/4” soaker. Germination looks good. I need to get a pic of that. Plan is to top dress with fertilizer in a few weeks before another promising rain chance.

And a quick question about broadleaf herbicide. I don't know much about it, but when my plot was consumed with weeds once, I used 2-4d and Escort to knock them down. My dad thinks they had a residual effect on the legumes and clover I spread later. It would make sense to me that could be why only the rye grew that year... I dunno.
