And a quick question about broadleaf herbicide. I don't know much about it, but when my plot was consumed with weeds once, I used 2-4d and Escort to knock them down. My dad thinks they had a residual effect on the legumes and clover I spread later. It would make sense to me that could be why only the rye grew that year... I dunno.
You are correct, if using 2,4-D you should wait 15-30 days, depending on the amount used, before planting broadleaf crops like soybeans and brassicas. That explains why only the rye germinated. Escort also has a carryover and is not designed for crop fields. Residual carryover is the main reason to use something more versatile like glyphosate to clean up weeds before planting.

Well, it looks like germination is pretty good! We keep dodging all the rain still. The plan is to hit this with some 46-0-0 for the brassicas and oats before the next promising chance. Maybe apply a more rounded fertilizer with some additional clover seed in early spring. I am going by my old soil test since this plot is essentially unchanged since I had it done. I am really thinking that the chemical residual got me, but it seems I am clear of that now.

T-Max, have you managed to find a replacement for that property that is to sell this fall?

No... :( There is still a chance that whoever purchases it would allow us to hunt. A guy can dream, right? I guess it is time to pour my effort into making our place as good as I can and increase my savings so I might be able to expand some day. We'll see.

I guess that's the only way we can take out the possibility of losing quality hunting ground. Land isn't cheap, but as you already know from experience, it's a rewarding investment. Too bad it's so high up there!

I also picked up a redneck bale blind really cheap after last season. I built a platform for it out of some old treated sign posts and a bit of new treated 5/4 decking. Should hold up well.

The redneck bale blinds are very well built. This will be our 5th year of hunting out of ours. I would recommend not leaving the out year around. The nice thing is you don't have to set it a month before season; the deer get used to them almost immediately.

You mean not leaving the frame out? In have a Redneck softside and I remove the cover, but the frame stays out year round.

Well, it’s a bitter sweet end to our season. We will be losing access to our lifelong hunting land, but the seller secured us permission through the end of our rifle season. The old man and I were both able to shoot nice bucks for only the second time in 30 years. Given that he is my hunting partner and cameraman, and he can’t even turn on a TV, we have no field photos. I’ll try to get better pics when we process them.

Can someone please tell me to quit pouting and get back on the horse?! . I haven’t hunted since we lost our hunting ground two seasons ago. I am out of venison. I only had one hobby (hunting) and lack motivation to do anything now. I can’t afford a lease (nor do I like the concept) and nothing is for sale that doesn’t price me out with the first bid. Dad continues to plague our place with a never ending dose of 2-4d. Now Uncle Joey is trying to take my every last penny….
