Sam's Stompin' Ground! - Illinois 170 acres

Field #2 (from original aerial) - We call this the Bean Field even though it hasn't been in beans in a few years.
1 acre but there were a few sections that we weren't able to kill (scroll up to view) so there is some weeds mixed in but pleeeenty of good food growing here.

And the plot I was the most proud of... We call this the Old Man Plot (1/2 acre) and man it's beautiful. Notice the scrape tree and trail cam on the post. Trail cam pics to follow when I get some more time!

I had some time to share some updates via trail cam. First thing is I can say that the Operation TreeCoy is a big success so far. We had cameras over 2 of the 3 we put out and they are getting a lot of attention. No visible scrapes on the ground but a lot of deer came to investigate.

The bucks are hard horn and starting to get frisky

This 3 yr old even looks like he's chasing this doe. Maybe to get out of his food plot or maybe he's a bit anxious!

Sam, looks like you have a deer paradise there. The quality of those buck is just awesome. Your hard work is evident as well.

Thanks golden, I will have some updates after the opening weekend of course! Wonder if the treecoy will still be standing by then

Opening weekend update!

It was somewhat warm, muggy, and even rainy Saturday but we went after em anyways! Shooting time was 6:33 AM and I double lunged a doe at 26 yards by 6:50 AM. Check out the Nockturnal in the ground in the pic below.

It started to rain around 7:15 AM so I figured I better go follow blood while I can. There was a 100 yard track job and she died in the CRP field (man thats tough to track through even with a good shot!)

I was able to check 4 of our 5 trail cameras. I was extremely thrilled to see that a buck we have called Split Brow for the last 2 years has returned just like clockwork. We have never gotten a velvet pic of this deer, but this is the third year he has shown up in late September. I think he's 6.5 yr old based on the fact that he was a big fat 140" 12 pt 2 years ago when I guessed he was 4.5 yo. He could even be older?

Here's a couple other bucks. This first one is a home boy on our farm. I want to think he's 3.5 and will get passed this year. Really hoping he sticks around for next year and is a slammer. He walked through this funnel 13 times in 3 weeks the camera was out, but NEVER during the day.

Also, this buck showed up. I don't know him very well but his body looks 4.5 yr old to me? Thoughts?

Dang, you got some nice bucks. Huge bodies and awesome horns. Congrats on the doe harvest. Looks like a great shot.

Todd

Great shot on the doe - looks like she did a lot of bleeding in that 100 yard dash! Looks like you are shooting a Bowtech Assassin? I got blood on mine this weekend too...

Bucks look great! Good luck with them.

Yessir, the Assassin has been a really nice bow for about 5 years now. Love it. She actually didnt bleed a TON considering the shot. It was slow tracking through the tall grass even though she only went 100 yards.

Well... hunting and cameras have been EXTREMELY slow and frustrating. We barely saw any deer this weekend and our cameras which were popping off like crazy in previous weeks have gone down to a crawl. My theory as to why...
1. Our corn field was the first to be picked in the area (approx Sept 25th) so there is ZERO corn left for them. Meanwhile, surrounding farms have standing beans, standing corn, and freshly picked corn. Patterns have changed drastically
2. Weather. We have been hunting cold fronts that luckily have fallen on weekends but man overall it's been too warm
3. Acorns/Lull - I think these two go hand in hand but seems to have effected our farm lately
4. We got our first picture of a trespasser. We have come to learn that our neighbors Black Lab got injured and lost. The neighbors sent out people to look for it on our place. I feel for the people, so I can't blame them. Although a call before hand would have been nice.
5. I planted our food plots too early. I was all about catching a good storm in Mid August with my grains mix. I did catch it, but now our wheat, rye and oats are knee high and seem to have lost their attraction. The good news is there is a good amount of turnips, AWP, and clover growing under all this stuff. Hopefully it will become attractive again as the deer run out of corn and acorns.

Here's a picture of the plot where most of my pics above came from called the "Old Man Field", but from the vantage point of my ladder stand. Gorgeous looking but we have seen 2 fawns over 2 cold front evening sits here.

Compare the height of the plot in this pic (the only decent buck we've had a pic of in quite a while) to the pics above! Do you think the deer will come back to this field and eat the tall rye/oats?

And finally, our big buck Split Brow smiled for the camera but this was Oct 6th or so and have not seen him since. He will be around I'm sure but I'd love a daytime pic! Or to see him... Any further score guesses? I have him as a 6.5 yr old based on 3 years of pics.

Nice buck-very mature. If the deer get hungry or heavy snow fall they will come back and eat the taller grain. But as long as there is plenty of other food they will probably ignore it.
