Recreating a Deer Woods

Dang it Dave. So odd as I've been thinking of why you haven't been on here for a good while. I actually worried some drama could be affecting your family. You get well soon my friend and I promise unceasing prayers for you.
 
I was wondering where you went...I am glad they caught it and it was operable and that you are healing up. Prayers for your healing and continued good health!
 
Dave, I've been wondering about you and felt that you must have had some sickness. I'm so happy to see you posting again and hope that you are setting in a deer stand soon. So sorry to hear what you have been going through, but glad to see you back. You will be in my prayers my friend.
 
Dave, I don’t know you the way some of the ol’ timers here do, but I will be praying for you. Take the doc’s advice and take it slow, the results will be worth it.
 
That's a kick in the nuts. We miss you Dave. I hope that your treatment goes well.

I sure like that wood interior. I was thinking about you just the other day when I planed up some of my wood.

Thank you everyone. Life is still great!! Daily deer parade thru apples will kick in a few minutes, a great start to each morning. (hope my words match my thoughts).

But LIFE comes first, even before habitat plans. A ride from Samaritan Hospital via Lewis County Transport to Albany Med proved that. The new focus: a Glioma brain tumor in the parietal region which has affected (hopefully not permanently) my typing and spelling abilities. It is now 2 weeks after surgery, the stitches are out and I'm beginning to see small improvements but not enough to write a coherent sentence. My wife is writing this for me today. The odd thing is that I can speak and carry on conversation as though nothing has happened. So contacting me by phone is welcomed. PM me and I will send you my phone number. In several weeks I will be starting radiation and chemo therapy to keep that monster at bay.

Other than that life blip, all is going well. It is our time of year and it is exciting to start the season. The deer are active and visiting Turning Point (TP) apple tree morning and evening. The lawn was left uncut this year and the deer are enjoying the brush in the yard (good thing we live in the woods.) Friends are helping with habitat efforts to keep things going while I recuperate from surgery. TP and special apple development continues as a focus of our small group of apple developers. One by one we are discovering new trees which are .001% of the trees we see.View attachment 22643 View attachment 22644

Meanwhile my wife and I are having a great time rebuilding our cottage. Over the years we have personally cut trees, sawed timbers into boards. The entire cottage, with the exception of the rafters and sill plates, are made from our wood. The joy of seeing the end product is unexplainable.View attachment 22642

Dave, sorry to hear about this, I'm rooting total remission and for your speedy recovery. There's nothing like a reality check like this one to bring life's priorities to fresh clarity. I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures. Allen

I miss his post...I don’t know why but out of the blue a few days back he was on my mind and I brought this thread back up. I am going to go back and read through his thread in his memory...Godspeed Dave!

Back before Dave got sick, he took a great interest in the many, many wild apple trees on his place. He spent a lot of time seeking out the special ones. He knew how much I loved apples, and he offered to send me scion wood from some of his trees. I topworked four of them, and they all did well. Three are still doing fine, but one got taken down during our bad storm this spring.

He eventually noted one apple tree that stood out above all of the rest as a deer apple. It was highly disease resistant, highly productive and dropped over a long period of time. He became good friends with Ryan at Blue Hill Nursery, and that tree is now sold as "Turning Point." I also have one of those planted on my farm. Dave was a great person with a passion for all the good things in life. I will always remember him - and especially when I walk by his trees.
