Oh those Bradford pears...

I always new that were exotic and non-native, but this past weekend riding from wilmington, NC to Charlotte, NC about halfway there you started to see them blooming in the middle of wide open areas and places you knew they were not planted. When I asked my grandma, she said PBS had done a story on the callery(sp) pear and how the damaging the thorns and thicket forming nature all starts with the bradford pear. Unreal!
 
These are escapees here near work...I will get pictures of others later. Everything green or white in these photos other than the cedars is a Callery pear...none human planted and this infestation took less than 10 years...

Walked a little on the added 15 acres and jumped 10 bedded does...this place is perfect, deer bed on the back 10 and feed on the additional 15

If you can find those escaped trees when they are young, they make good rootstock to graft good pears to. I've done that with pears here with success.

Exactly! Graft them or kill them. They are potential carriers of fireblight as well. 99% of mine get cut and squirted.
 
I think that article should include a bark grafting YouTube video. They are easy to change over with bark grafts still doesn't solve the problem but would help keep them from spreading as quickly. If a bird can eat an entire kieffer and transplant the seed elsewhere I think we may have bigger problems. Behind the parking lot at work I bet there is 20 wild ones and I see about ten at least on my commute. Plus we have three on our place two in the fence row I think they will be hard to move due to size.
 
Im looking out the window of my classroom room at school and count 25 lining our parking lot at school. These are all full size trees. What are the odds bossman lets me cut em down and replant wildlife trees???

If wasnt at work, I would. I believe I can convince him to have the county (schools) cut them down and let me classes replant with nativess
 
Im working at the farm tomorrow, may stop and see the 2 closest houses and check their yard. Im 90% sure principal will allow me to either cut and replant, or at least do the replanting.
 
I have been fighting Callory pears for several years now. I absolutely hate those things.
