House and Habitat build thread:

We are 22 days dry right now...10 day shows none in forecast...
Concrete looks good! I should be looking at some around February...still in savings mode with my brushhogging money.
Lol, Farmlogs show's that we are 22 day from our last rain too. Probably the same front that moved through. We don't have any chances in the near future either, but next week is a traditional week for us to get a storm. I have seed ready for fall plots, would like to have a decent chance of rain.

Feb will show up pretty soon. Keep the build posted!

I am about to give up on September plotting...hopefully my mid August plot lives...

Looks like you are going to stick build since I see no poles?

Steel. The uprights are I-beams and bolt on with a flange (good observation by the way). The anchors are sunk into the holes. This alleviates chances of rot down the road, gives me a clearspan ceiling, and has good wind load/updraft engineering. It didn't hurt that his prices were cheaper than many local wood post builders. Really the windload and clearspan were the deciding factors for me.

That's great...I got to thinking about it after I posted and saw those anchors in the concrete. I am looking at a 14" tall 30x50 with concrete entry and roof and 3 12' doors on the front and one bay having a slider door on the back so I can drive completely through and open it for cross breeze. Full insulation...structure and concrete around $20k without OH doors and wiring. It's a pole barn and I have had the guy build me one before that worked out good...he does the pour and everything other than OH doors...

Unbelievable the price difference I just put up a 40x64x14 stick built and was close to 45k and that was several k cheaper than anybody else around. Only insulation on the ceiling but does have a footing and finished metal ceiling.

Lots going on with the house build and a little with habitat. It's been hot and dry so my sunflower and millet plots haven't done much, but the deer are hammering them anyway. I won't have much thatch for fall throw-n-mow though.

Shipped 300 sterile heffers this week. They averaged 220lbs of gain (on grass) over the last 100 days. 2.2lbs per day is good gains with no feed combined with hot weather. Plus they were gentle and super easy to work with!

Good gains on heifers for early April through mid-July. Selling at that time you missed the big price slide on heifers in Aug....there is still a $100 discount on hiefers.

Send me a text or email about the sterile heifer process....I'm curious!

I don't know the process. I asked several times and all I got was that they hired a guy who did it. I'm curious too!

Been a great fall! Got the shop finished (except for a few things I want to do to the interior).

I wanted clearspan so that the kids could play ball inside when the weather wasn't nice. So far it's a hit.

This will be a small tool room. It's bigger than it looks and with some proper hangers and shelves will store a lot of stuff. Above it will be a loft that cantilevers out to the center of the shop. 12'x12' storage space for odd stuff like spare wood, metal, decoys, etc... This will go a long ways in keeping the floor space clean.

Pumpkins did good. We ended up with 5 that (by measurement) ranged between 140lbs and 190lbs. It was good to get the kids in on it. They had to identify bugs when they attacked and figure out what to use to rid them. They dealt with fertilizer. They took measurements and calculated wts. Overall lots of good. Plus they grew some cool stuff.

We've been dumping them in our foodplots. They guys up north say deer love to eat them, but ours haven't been touched. They just set there and rot (a lot like turnips, our deer won't eat them).

Fishing this fall has been outstanding. Crappie can be caught as fast as you can pull them in and some nice bass have been hauled in. For whatever reason my oldest boy always catches the biggest bass. He broke his 6lb record with a 7.90lb fish on our last trip to the pond. It was a monster of a fish... pics just don't do it justice.

The big one was just longer than the tailgate is wide.

The early season duck migration was incredible this yr! My youngest shot his first woody. Grandpa said if he ever shot a wood duck that he would get it mounted for him. The kid is on cloud 9!

Hunting with the kids has been a blast this yr.

The younger one has decided that he absolutely hates spooking the deer while walking in. So he has me wait on the hill while he sneaks up to the rim and scopes out the stand site. Then he waves me the ok. Both hunted with a crossbow and neither has shot one yet. Not because they didn't have chances, but because they are waiting for the right deer.

I hunted from the ground a lot this yr. Got really close to some nice bucks but nothing I want to shoot yet. This buck made for a fun encounter!

I think I figured out why I don't find a lot of sheds. It has nothing to do with my ability to see them, it has to do with tree rats that take stuff up into trees to chew on.

Still getting good bucks on trailcam. I've followed this one for 3 yrs and have a set of his sheds. He hasn't put much antler on but his body exploded this yr. I hope next yr shows some antler growth.

Basement: I got a backboard from my wife's high school gym and was going to install it in the shop... but damn it's heavy! So heavy that I wouldn't trust it hanging it 10ft up so I made it a tv stand for the basement.

Am in the 405 (street outlaws slang) today for work...just a quick line to tell you it all looks amazing and I am sure the shop turned out better than you ever imagined based on what you were talking about doing in the past...

Thanks Okie. The shop turned out great compared to what I originally planned (cost a little more too).
Enjoy your day in the 405. :)

I saw where Okie called you out for an update and it's like you were just waiting for the challenge. Great stuff going on. I know those kids are having a ball, and Pops enjoys tagging along, from the rear. One of your deer looks like a Texas Longhorn.

What?? A bunch of pics finally after several months and I don't get not one of a Kansas sunset over the grain fields? I'm unfriending you.
Seriously awesome stuff you do with house and family. Very nice barn/shed/garage. That's on my list in the next few years. My ins agent, a good friend, said I should tear down my old barn and I told him barns may collapse but farmers never tear one down. And it was full of "stuff". He just shook his head.
