House and Habitat build thread:

I figured that might be the case; we too don't give the yard deer any special pass when we are off in the woods hunting. And of course hunting is the point. It is amazing how the deer will get used to yard activity and even plinking when done regularly.

This awnless wheat is going to produce a ton of grain, it looks great!

Deer are still hammering the licking branch and the trail cam is showing a lot more use of mineral than before. A couple of the regulars are showing good growth on the bases.

Turkeys are still making the rounds, and I've started a wildflower project for the wife.

All looks great! I have only had a couple bucks on camera and several does about ready to pop. My hog is very active right now in daylight so should be able to kill him soon and turkeys are everywhere!

Your wife will really appreciate that flower planting as will the pollinators...

Good luck getting that hog. It seems you have at least one on your place every yr.
The wife LOVED my sunflower patch last yr. Said I have to plant them every yr now. Hopefully this mix does something, I bordered a walking path with it so maybe she can enjoy it while she is out and about.

Yesterday the kids and I went on a run. The 9yr old was cruising and pulled ahead a little bit. I came around a corner and the kid was standing in the path frozen. He had run up on a bobcat and it didn't know he was there. The kiddo thought it was petty cool that he was only 20 ft from it and it hadn't seen him yet.

Just a few minutes ago the wife sent me a text with a cat that was hunting just off the deck. And my oldest watch 3 yotes from the same deck this morning. We have a good supply of predators!

Do you have quail using your property? I always liked to see the cats even though I know they are hard on quail. Haven't seen quail in over 25 years and all of a sudden we have some show up again over on our "home 25". More excited about that than anything!

I can understand your excitement about quail. I love to hunt quail but our numbers dropped a decade or so ago. I'm glad you got some back on your place.
We have a few coveys but they don't like the 50 our house is on. They much prefer the land with cattle on it. I suspect I've let the 50 get to tall for their liking.

That is weird on what yours prefer. The bobwhite quail we have seen use the ground without livestock here but cattle ground here is very barren stuff...have even hunted quail in the woods when I was younger...

Our cattle pasture isn't really barren or low, but the 50 at the house has gotten very thick from mid-thigh down. The cattle pasture is a nice mix of habitat; with forbs, native bunch grasses, and thickets. Isn't most of the pasture your way fescue or brome? I haven't found sods to be great bird habitat.

We find them in the forest often when our pin oaks are dropping. I've shot my fair share of birds with acorn in their craw.

Thanks lak. They caught a nice bucket of fish (I'm guessing they kept 20 or more) but no big one's like they were after. It would have been nice to pull in a 6+ pounder for the tournament but that's how fishing/hunting goes. They still did well; 14th out of 125 teams entered.

My trail camera blitzed out (not real happy with Moultrie's quality right now, two in less than a yr... I hope they replace this one too) so no trail cam pics for a while. But I can take pics with my phone. This guy spent the morning in the food plot below the deck ripping up huge mouthfuls of breakfast. It's always rewarding to see them eat what you plant!
