House and Habitat build thread:

Burned to clear brush, the grass went up well even though it was very green (smoked a lot though). It was mostly native and fescue.

Do tell about the turkeys. My boys screwed up a shot at the same tom 3 times! Lol, lots of lessons learned.

Lets just say you really need to make sure you have a shell chambered when you are set up for turkeys...

Lol, I'm picturing you realizing what happened shortly after the "click"!

My 9yr old squeezed the trigger and nothing happened. He had played with the pump release button while we were waiting and it wasn't locked so it didn't fire. Lots of tears over that one.

Turkey hunting can bring some steep learning curves. As a friend stated yesterday, "Birds on your place have always been hard to hunt!" Most of the time they are somewhat difficult but when you only get 1 tag then you only need 1 quality moment. Absolutely quiet Sunday and in timber which sucked......gobbled well Mon early but had their track shoes on....so we walked several 'false paths'. Final sit for SIL....called in a totally silent bird at noon...set decoy in a small clearing off corner of a NG field which had small cedars as a screen from long range view where they like to loaf and feed mid-day.....tom came in without a peep or a strut just the upbeat crow behavior indicating an 'arrival' of something new.....as my turret scanned from right to front center bright red and black were apparent....as my orbs scanned right I can see the SIL had awoken from his day nap and was in one of those 'cat waiting to pounce' poses. Having 'John Wayned' a few birds in my career.....all I will say is when you start such it must be one fluid smooth quick motion with a <3 second delivery before you are 'HAD'! Sent him home hungry...and only said a turkey hunt success starts when your but cushion hits the ground and then the angle of your butt in relation of birds arrival...nap or no nap....but a nap will slow you down which many times brings repeated success!

Glad I'm not the only one who gets antsy while hunting and thinking about the other things that I want to get done.
Yes...unlike deer hunting my Turkey hunts are usually a less than 30 minute deal before I have to get to doing whatever chores I have allotted myself for that particular day. I am not an aggressive Turkey Hunter... May get out 1 or 2 more times before our season is over on May 6th. Time to get fired up about Brush Hogging Season...

A couple of bucks stepped into the yard yesterday to check things out. It's good to see top growth starting!
Love learning their personalities. One walked right into the yard and nervously checked things out, one stopped at a hedge tree and ate leafs the whole time, and the other two stayed in the background.

Always enjoy family pics enjoying the land we have. Hunting, fishing, and just enjoy the outdoors. Some great pics. I have friends that are obsessed with mushroom hunting. I have never found a single one on my place.

Exactly! My wife and I apparently had different mental images of the place while we were building it, the shooting platform (what my wife calls the "deck") being one of them. :)
I'm with your wife on that one. The deer within shooting range of our barn, those deer that entertain us throughout the year have 100% sanctuary in the "yard". Coyotes are a different matter as we aren't hunting them, merely weeding them from our garden.

Thanks guys.

I like to give her (the wife) a hard time about it, but we haven't actually shot any deer from the house/deck. We have shot deer that frequent the yard but we mostly hunt about a mile from the house so it's their own fault for wondering so far away from the sanctuary. :)
We do have a yard doe that is off limits anywhere on the place. She has a rip in her ear that makes her identifiable and she is a good momma. She had twins last yr and frequents the yard plots very often. We plink enough that the yard deer don't even look up anymore when a rifle goes off. They seem to know where and when they are safe.

I have shot several yotes from the house. I don't actively hunt them but when they brazen enough to get within .22 range in the daylight I go ahead and take a shot.
