House and Habitat build thread:

Everything still loves the rub/scent post and the water hole! I'm amazed at how many non-deer species stop to check things out and leave their scent.

And I don't see much reason to look for sheds yet. Maybe in a couple more weeks...

Adding more cedar to the basement. Not sure I'll like it so I'm just leaving it the way it is for a while to see if it grows on me.

Planted a couple of rows of miscanthus rhizomes along a mowed trail that the deer use a lot. I left room in the middle so that I can still get the mower down the center.

And had a nice little burn with the family to finish the day. The kids have a blast with fire.

I keep getting the itch to look for sheds but the yard deer and trail cam deer are still holding.

Took time to go on a fishing run yesterday. I grab a pole and my running shoes and take off pond hopping. My bigger loop is 6 ponds and 4.5 miles of running. I don't take any extra gear or stringers. I just run and fish. It would be the perfect way to spend an afternoon except I can't figure out how to keep my beer from foaming up while running.

A front came through and it was cold and WINDY! The fishing was slow but I figured out a pattern and did ok.
Here is a sampling of what I caught. Nothing big but no dinks either. Overall a great way to spend the afternoon.
I love the colors of our "cold" water fish.

Built my first fish structure today. I hope to situate it in a spot that can provide good fishing for the kids (and me, although they usually catch bigger fish than do so I don't know why I'm worried about helping them).

While I was mixing cement I looked up and had a visitor watching me. They are sure a goofy animal.

Did you get your trees planted? Also let me know when you want some cable
Planted them the day you brought them to me!
I had originally thought that when the trees came in would be a good time to pick up cable... kind of forgot.

checked cams yesterday and my bucks are still holding horn also. That's the best and only use for cedar trees IMO. Love sinking them for fish structure.

Lol, I don't quite share your hatred of cedar trees but I do think this a good use of them. This particular one was our Christmas tree this yr.

Keep your place fire safe,I just sent crews to west of medicine lodge to help fight the fire that came up from Oklahoma. They are saying this one may be bigger than Anderson creek fire. Most likely we will be sending day crews back also.Up north is asking for trucks also another big one by Hutch

Thanks for the warning. We could smell smoke earlier this evening. I have all of our hoses hooked up and everything cleared/mowed that I can. The fire department has toured our driveway and know the best approach to get their trucks here. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

When is the wind supposed to let up? I hope your crew does well but I bet it's a long night for them.

Is there a fire map of some sort on the internet to track progress?

I haven't seen any maps online.Wind should start slacking some for part of the day tomorrow but then again supposed to drop to 20s tonight.

All weekend our entire area was covered in smoke from fires about 5 miles south of our place and then another one that was 5 or so miles south of our home 10 place...we got 1/2" of rain last night but still under a red flag warning...You folks up Kansas way are having a hard time of it with many thousands of acres burned...be safe!

Oh yeah, Love the fish pictures!

You are destined to have lots of rain since you have started your polebarn and want to do dirt work on your new plots.

Luckily no fires are near our place right now but the yr is young. It's something I worry about every spring.

Thanks on the fish. I really enjoy taking a few minutes to wet a line. I don't know why I don't do it more often.

I sure hope we are going to get rain but this is the first one we have had since Mid February...man it's dry out there!!! I seeded the plots 3 weeks ago and needed this rain to get a little germination...The pole barn will be next springs project...out of $ and what little I do have will go to the tax man in April :(

My goal every year is to go fishing but it never happens

I kind of hope a fire does get a little loose up in our area and gets on our place...leaves burning in the forest is a whole nother animal than grasslands on fire...

The fire in western part of state started in Oklahoma and now are saying killed 5 people so far counting 3 by Texas border. We are close to 200,000 acres and then have another big one north of Wichita
