I also got the new Banks feeder installed and filled up with corn and protein pellets. Picked up the 4x4 post and quickcrete but forgot the PVC pipe to put over the 4x4 to keep the critters from climbing it. Oh well, I'll see what happens on the trail cam. I can always add it later.

No rest for the habitat manager! Glad I got those 6 plums taken care of on Sunday. Box of 9 apples from Chris at Turkey Creek Trees showed up yesterday. Packed and shipped with care as usual.

These apples from Chris were planted in the Spring of 2015. Pics were taken 15 months after planting.

This is a great thread and wonderful story. As I sit here in bed with my wife and small daughter I can't help to think that I'm getting ready to start my own adventure. We purchased a 30 acre farm about an hour west of philly. We went from a 3500sf house to a 1750sf ranch. It was an estate sale and hasn't been touched in 10-15 years. I've done some bush hogging but that's about it, my heads spinning with all the things to do. The good thing is .......the deer are here!

Thanks Chad, I really appreciate the feedback. Nice to see another PA boy here. Sounds like you found a great property, living there will definitely get you to your goals faster. Moving west away from Philly is a good start LOL. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your new place!

Headed up to the farm Saturday evening with the intention of having a campfire and a few cold ones while me and my buddy Chris built the tree cages for the next morning. Well, old man winter didn't get the memo that it was spring and temps dropped just below 30 real quick. Beautiful night for stargazing, if you bundled up. We settled for dinner in town and beers around the wood stove. This is what we woke up to.

Those are some dandy looking trees you got from Chris. Super neat job on the feeder too.

After a delicious breakfast at our favorite diner in town, the sun was already warming up on its way to a 60 degree day. We had 9 apples to plant, 3 were going in each soft mast cut we cleared earlier. The breakdown of my order from Chris at Turkey Creek Trees was: 3 Enterprise, 2 Maslin, 2 Nova Spy, 1 Spencer and 1 Granny Smith. Each cut would get an Enterprise, two cuts would get a Maslin & Nova Spy and the Spencer & Granny Smith completed the third with the lone Enterprise.

Planting in a new cut can be a challenge. I had to pick out a few likely spots then do a shovel check to make sure I wasn't hitting any big roots.

One of the big jobs on our habitat plan is to clear a trail through the thick, north end of the property. This trail will go around the soft mast cut in the sanctuary and in between a wildlife cut, basically making a half moon back around to my secluded rear field. We got the apple planting finished with enough daylight to tackle the trail clearing. It's amazing what two guys with chainsaws can accomplish.

Extra bonus while clearing the trail through the sanctuary. This apple was surrounded by young, big tooth aspen so I got to releasing it. Should fruit well out in this old clearcut now that it can get some sun.

Pretty busy week with my daughter's 3 night musical performance and Easter weekend so not much farm work going on. I received my 3 chestnut crabapples and 3 Hewes crabapples from Turkey Creek Trees and they are outstanding specimens and packaged & shipped great as usual. Need to carve out some time to get these in the ground.

The girls and I did manage to turn a bunch of the wild boar meat into some delicious hot Italian sausage, kielbasa and pulled pork. Delicious eats for the holiday weekend.

Thanks Johnny. We had a bunch of friends over for a BBQ and Pittsburgh Penguins playoff hockey game. A lot of people could not believe it was home made and from a wild boar. Everyone said it was delicious.
