Corn cob looking pod

So this reminds me of those baby corn cobs you get in salads and there were a bunch hanging off of some small, shrub type trees. Any ideas?

So I used the "Picture This" app that some folks had mentioned on this forum and it worked pretty well. This appears to be an American Hazelnut.

Reminds me of what they call a "catkin". My chestnut trees do this, but they look different.... Based on an interwebs search I think you may be correct.....if so....real nice find. Get them some sunlight!

Nice find Pinetag! I shall watch for them here although I don't recall ever noticing one. It looks like this may be a good time to find them.

It is the perfect time to identify hazelnut bushes. I just found one on my property line that is huge-probably 10-12 feet tall. Pinetag, how long are those catkins? The bushes I have here have short catkins, maybe an inch at best. I know there are some alders that have catkins this time of year also.

These are probably about 3". The trees themselves are maybe 6-8' tall.

Edit...I think they're actually more like 10' tall which puts them in line with what you're seeing.

Resurrecting this old thread to confirm that these are definitely hazelnuts! I laughed when I saw the thread title since I now know they are called catkins.

You picking any yet? I picked most of mine as the tip of the nut was just turning brown indicating to me that they were done growing, so I picked them to beat the squirrels to at least a few. They were a bit sticky for whatever reason.

I picked one just to see what it looked like inside but it was still a very pale, yellowish green color. I think I'll give them another week or two.

You may make some friends if you have enough to make them available in the annual seed swap forum!

I would actually like to participate in the seed/nut exchange and hazelnuts would be one of the few things I have that others might want. I planted a couple seedlings down along the edge of my creek plot also, so hopefully between all of them I'll be able to harvest quite a few in the coming years.
