Another lawnmower plot

A few weeks ago we had rain forecasted for several days in a row, so I put in a half acre summer plot via spray - throw - mow using my lawn mower. I do this sometimes in the summer just to take care of the itch - in order to get to do some plotting, which I enjoy. For this one I just used a bob mix with cowpeas, sumflowers, milo and some other summer stuff. Turned out pretty good. It does have some smartweed, but next year I will kill it and start all over in this spot.

I love the sunflowers! I wish the deer would let some grow for me. I threw 1 seed in my garden after finding it in my pocket when I got home from Spring planting. It’s 5 feet tall and just ready to bloom. In my plots, good luck finding any.

The stalks grow fast at first but it takes quite a while for the grain heads. Milo is just another name for grain sorghum.

I'll have to try it. I've grown regular sorghum as a soil builder, and millet for doves, I just never did milo. Regular sorghum looks less like corn than milo.

I think I waited 5 days. You can see in the first picture that the grass is browning out but still had just a tad of green left in it when I mowed.

You just need to put on those buffalo briefs and go out and do a rain dance. Just make sure that no one is watching......

Really coming on well now with the heat and decent rains. Cowpeas browsed hard.

I put in another one a few days ago. We will see how this one does. It was planted with white clover, medium red clover, chicory, sunhemp, canola, wheat and radish.

This last one is starting to come on up, but needs more rain. Got a small one today, but every little bit helps. Will check this weekend and see how the progress is going.

This is how the clover plot turned out that put in a few yards away from the first plot shown above. I mowed this 5 inches high about 8 days ago to get rid of some vernal sweet grass heads and some red sorrel tops. It bounced back nicely and the clover is now making heads.
