Winter Rye

I think the rye crop was poor this year around the northern states. My hunch is it had something to do with the late start to spring. I know a handful of guys that had awful rye this spring, including myself. Northern Iowa had a foot of snow fall on April 24th.

That's what I heard as well for the reason of the shortage, demand is going up every year, but a short crop this year. I'm trying my first wack at cover cropping in at least one of our ag fields this year. Having Rye and turnips/radishes seeded into standing corn to try and suppress some weeds, provide a mulch and try to get some more OM back into a almost beach sand field. Going to soybeans next season

Rye is $18 per hundred in SE Pennsylvania, same as last year, bin run, then the local mill runs thru a cleaner. I didn't hear of any shortage?

I just bought 22 bushel of fresh cut, bin-run rye, from a farmer. $7.50/bu. In the tri-state (Indiana, Ohio, Michigan) area. He had more, if anyone wants the info. Not certified seed, but I planted bin-run last year and was as good a crop as I've ever had.

I find winter rye will grow in my marginal soil food plots with no problem if it is planted on it's own. I like to overseed it in my Northern managers mix RR Eagle beans. This year the drought stunted the Eagle beans to the point where I doubt they will canopy. That plus the fact that the deer are eating on them just as they should be. I just try to get it out before a decent rain.

I don't sell much WR but I can tell you that I have a truckload of Perennial Rye (turf type) coming in 2 weeks and it was about the same price as last year. I haven't seen the PO but I believe it's coming out of Minnesota and not Oregon. That tells me the crop was not too bad. Bluegrass however is way up and in short supply. The only WR i sell is for cover crop on bare ground that will be seeded in the spring for turf and it is as close to zero/zero weed and crop as is available so I really don't know about bin run or any of that. I just wait until our forklift driver knocks the corner off of a few bags then write it off as trucking damaged. Then all i need is some turnips and brassicas.

Nixa seed company in Nixa Mo. priced it today at $19.85 for 50 lb bag.

My atv crapped out on me today. I got most of my plots planted except two that I was going to sow with winter rye / crimson clover. Can I just broadcast the rye and expect decent germination? Maybe up the poundage sown to increase my chances

Yes and yes. Especially if you do so before a rain. WR shouldn't go in till at least Labor Day here, and maybe a little later for you but it won't hurt anything.

Checked price of WR this past week at my local feed store. 14$ so same as last year. Even urea I bought had dropped in price.

I bought some yesterday at Osterlings near Butler Pa.
$10 for a 50# bag. That's the best price per-pound that I could find in this area.
Some places still don't have it yet.

Wow I’d just buy expensive BOB oats and use for a cover cover if I had to pay that! Can’’t imagine why in any way it would be that much. Wonder if WW is also that much but prob would not do well in the south.

It was the feed and seed store in Lexington. I was quoted $39 at another store and $42 at a store closer to our property in Lake City. I guess there just isn’t enough in SC? If anybody finds anything cheaper in the midlands let me know. The bags I saw today were from a farm in Georgia.
