That's a nice looking layout, the pictures portray an old time hunting farm feel.

Do you own the barn as well? Sounds like an ideal setup for a small acreage. That barn is on 10 acres. We have 30. It was once a 160 acre farm. The other neighbor owns the 120 and has for years. Lot of long time owners in the area. It’s not even a mile from the lake so it’s real close to a lot of residential. No hunting by the lake. Tons of deer in the area including some giants. I think most people practice some sort of restraint in regards to buck harvest.

Thanks! That area is part of our field that I didn’t plant last fall. I was able to plant about 1/2 acre last fall and it was used daily. It’s kinda crazy watching the deer come across the neighbors yard and down into our field but it is what it is. I’ve got 18 crab apples coming in a month that will go below the barn in the untouched area. I’ll let them do their thing for 5-6 years before I plant anything amongst them.
Crab apples are my spring 2022 project, but taking pages of notes. if you don't mind -- What did you order and from where? I Like to watch what my Fellow WI members do as far as fruit trees,
We’ve got two places. One is river bottoms that we’ve had for 30 years. I’ve got about 30 trees there. 20/10 rough split between apples/crabs. Those were planted from 2011-2016. I’ve ordered from several places.
Burnt Ridge Nursery - WA
Adam’s Nursery - PA
Cummins Nursery - NY
St. Lawrence Nursery - NY
Couple came from another forum member from WI.
For this place this year I’ve got all crab apples coming. I ordered from Blue Hill Wildlife Nursery and Northern Whitetail Crabs. I’ve basically switched to mainly crabs as I’m hoping they will tolerate less maintenance and have less issues in general.
For strictly deer apples, I’d stick with disease resistant varieties. My main 3 are Liberty, Freedom, and Enterprise. Only have to deal with bugs with these. Not sure what zone you’re in but that’s also critical. You can try and push it zone-wise but with how cold we can get here don’t be surprised to lose a tree if you do.
For crabs I’ve got a bunch of varieties.
Winter wildlife crab
All-winter hangover
Violi’s Hanging
Trailman
Chestnut
Centennial
Dolgo
Kerr
Golden Hornet
30-06
Droptine
Wickson
Got a few different varieties coming next month.
Buckman
Big Dog
Turning Point
Whitney
Sheepnose
Gray Ghost

Badgerfowl, Thank you for compiling the list - Really appreciate it. I'm still in zone 4 (Little South East of Minocqua)
That is a sweet blind that you made, I would like to have one just like it on my hill top.

That’s a hard day’s work that will pay big future dividends.
