The Right 15

Made it out to spray one last time since we tilled. Is this an oak bush? Ha

Got the screens planted a little late so we will see. Not sure I needed a screen with the way the current habitat came up.

The wild black raspberries are tall and this place is full of em.

Still only does and Fawn pics. Have a feeling that will change once season gets here.

Been getting some good rain I think I should have planted 3 weeks ago. Planting the Fall plots Sunday! Picked up a new used packer today and am way too excited about it lol

That packer is sweet man! Place looks good.

Got the Fall plots in last weekend. Here is the plot list. Got some rain Monday night too. I actually planted rye with plot 3 now as a nurse crop.

Got the apple tree weeds all trimmed away too. The trees aren't looking too bad for being planted in May.

And FINALLY got a buck, and a good one at that, on camera. Bach group coming through yesterday. Sorry for bad pic as it's from a cell camera.

The only bad thing is the 55 acres to the south is being logged. 102 oaks taken out and they are staging literally next to my plot almost. Nothing I can do, and I sure hope they get done before season.

Hey All - My name is Jared and I have a deer hunting problem. ;) I have also been tagging along on other's land tours for a while now and just love it. I feel like I am there sometimes. I have been deer hunting since I was 12, and bow hunting since 14, but didn't get serious until late college. This puts me at 8 years of serious deer hunting if my math is correct.

I want to start off by saying thanks to all the very knowledgeable people. Thank you for what has already been contributed on this forum, the old QDMA forum, and even on FB. I am green in the property ownership and habitat world, but find myself reading about it almost daily on this forum, FB and MI Sportsman. I have been learning and watching for a couple years now, and can say that there is a sufficient amount of knowledge to be had, and for me to learn. Threads like TripleC's, Buckhunter's and Stickbow's keep me tagging along. Thank you and keep it up!

To the fun stuff! I was lucky enough to close on 15 acres in Jackson County MI last week. I had been looking and walking properties for over 2 years, and this parcel, although smaller than I would like, stuck with me after I walked it. It was also affordable, which caught my attention...and it was located in one of the top deer hunting counties in MI. It is a little over an hour from my house. It backs up to a large 200 acre swamp, and has deer cooperative neighbors(on what level I do not know).

My goal is to have a solid chance at a 3.5+ year old buck each season. May be tough on 15.

Another goal would be to build a small deer camp/family cabin off the road. It is important to me to get my twin 2 year old girls into the outdoors with Dad. The cabin isn't needed for that but would be awesome for a place to sleep and for great memories. We will camp too in summer.

I have always told myself I would rather have 15 or 20 acres in the right spot, than 40-80 in the wrong spot. We will see if that holds true.

Doesn't really matter how much property you own as long as it's in the right spot. We have around 1,000 acres, but a lot of our bucks are being killed by people that own 15-20 acres around us. As long as your neighbors are letting younger deer walk, you should have a good chance every year.

I would also say the less you do might be the best. Too much pressure is the worst thing you could do

The 2 Plots have seen rain a few times since planting, and are starting to show some good growth. I laid down 80-120 lbs on each plot of 12-12-12 before planting. The front plot next to the camera is oats and AW peas. You can see my screen far off, and brassicas are behind that. Will be overseeding wheat and rye soon.

Now that they have sprouted, should I hit them with anything else? 46-0-0 ? Or let them grow?

Hey Greg! Yea no hard horn yet on the cell cam. Going out this week to check the other. They should be losing velvet now. One camera on another farm showed one buck starting to shed.

Also hung one stand on the south edge, bout 30 yards off the plot. Should have good access there. Plots are starting to come in decently too.

Going to hang one or two more stands, overseed once more, and be done with it. Little late, but I dont plan on hunting it much til late October unless cams show me different.

Brassica plot looks great. Heck of a stack of logs in that pic. What are they? Oaks? Good luck on season.

Thanks dogg! Brassicas Coming in pretty good for sure.

They took 102 trees and 65 were oaks on the neighbor's. Some other maples and things too. The back of my woods was logged prior to buying and there are some GIANT oak stumps back in there. I expect the same for his land to the south.

GL to you as well my friend.

Looking good. Are they clear cutting neighbor's place? That could be good or bad for you based on what else you have around you.
Hope you have a great season

Thanks Lak! They took 102 trees out of 50 acres, which is a select cut. It will make it thick as my back woods, which will increase cover near me. I'm looking at it as a good thing, once they are finally done! The 60 to the N and my 15 were both select cut too. That puts 125 acres of soon to be all thick woods, next to 200 acres of swamp. I'm just excited for November, to finally step into my back woods with a lone wolf and see what is going on back there. Cant see far in there at all right now.

Hope you have a great season too my friend!

Made it out last week to finish hanging 2 stands, move cameras to mock scrapes, and take a look at the plots. Very happy with how the property is looking for the season.
