The Brushpile

Down this dead end road are 5 small plots that were weed whacked with this Stihl Weed Eater. Everything is done by hand in a remote location.

With lime, fertilizer and a week of rain, the Jumbo Ladino Clover plot will take off. This stand is in a prime location!

This plot was seeded with Chicory, Alfalfa, and Jumbo Ladino Clover. 95% of the weeds are Wing stem, plus Fescue has invaded. The weeds were clipped just above top of the clover, and the fescue was sprayed with Poast Plus. Wing Stem is a huge problem because it will grow back.

Any suggestions are welcome.

A friend told me about IMOX, which will kill weeds and grass in clover, alfalfa and chicory. I've sprayed IMOX twice, with great success!

Today unproductive fruit trees were cut and pushed off
to the side to create a food plot. The trees that were removed were 8-9 year old apples and pears. Keiffer Pears and Oriental pears have been productive, while the pears that were removed might have produced 3-4 pears per year.

The edge of the plot was also feathered by hinge cutting Loblolly x Pitch Pine, LLP. LLP will survive being hinge cut, which most pines will not do.

This is my neighbor, who knows that my success is his success. This plot will be planted in alfalfa. Chestnuts and other productive trees were left standing.

One lesson learned is that fruit trees must be planted in an orchard that's mowed, because birds will land on trees and deposit seeds from trees like Boxelder, Elm, Cedar, White Ash, etc., and clearing unwanted growth is a constant task, easily handled with a mower.

Always enjoy your updates Brush! One of the 1st I followed when I joined the old forum back in 2013. Looks like no drought issues for you this year.

Actually there was drought in July/August. Some trees have rolled leaves and the stomata on some trees have closed, so that hard mast production has stopped, and all growth has stopped. I did get good early season growth though.

Thanks for your support and I will be posting with more frequency.

THIS IS IMOX, which kills weeds and grass, but does NOT kill Clover Alfalfa of Chicory. I sprayed IMOX on my plots twice, and it works. It looks expensive, but at one ounce per gallon, I'll be able to spray all my plots for years!

This week I'll spray IMOX on Alfalfa that was planted this Spring, and then I'll over seed because Alfalfa can be planted twice in the same growing season. Alfalfa can't be successfully planted in following years, because it's toxic to new alfalfa. So, with IMOX I'll be able to Fall plant and get thick alfalfa plots.

This pic is from under a Mexican Plum Tree on the edge of a food plot I am about to plant. From looking at the pic what do I need to do prior to planting?

I just tried IMOX for the first time in NEMO. Had a clover plot over run with smartweed and some grass. Just sprayed about 2 weeks ago and haven't been at the farm to check on it. Hope I got a good kill.

These are Kieffer Pears. So loaded with pears that branches are breaking. Pears are far better that apples in the South, and require no spraying or pruning.

This pear broke under the weight!
