The Brushpile

Fall planting. I believe this is Dwarf Chinkapin Oak from Superior Trees in FL. In my zone trees get a head start when Fall planted. The trees won't grow while dormant, but they settle in and are ready to grow in the Spring.

Long roots find moisture.

Deep holes prevent J rooting.

Weed mats control weeds and act as a moisture barrier.

This shovel is 8 years old and has planted over 10,000 trees. It digs deep holes, but can also be used like a dibble bar for trees with small roots.

My father in AZ. Dad said that running my trap line was the highlight of his life! I took about 10 days leave, and in that 10 days we never saw a soul. Dad was a wildlife biologist.

Total desolation... not a sound... not even the wind. Most people have never heard silence!

Love the old pics, I'm sure you cherish those memories of trapping with your dad.
I have to say that it was also the time of my life. It was total desolation.... not even a sign or a fence to mark the U.S. Border. I trapped up a desert wash and noticed a small town... I had crossed into Mexico and didn't know it! :-o

Spraying glyphosate around a pine seedling. Weeds and grass are stomped down so they don't spring up and touch the pine with wet gly.

Done!

Schubert Chokecherry is a suckering cherry that's used for windrows and sold by Lincoln Oakes Nursery in ND. The leaves start out green and turn maroon in Summer.

The cherries ar edible and used in wine making.

A flagged tree has a better chance of survival, because it can be located for spraying around, watering, weed whacking around and mowing around. Without a flag a seedling is on it's own plus has a good chance of being mowed sprayed or being weed whacked.

This flagged seedling was sprayed around, and will be watered as needed.

Red Bud. Red Bud is a browsed species, and will grow in the open or in the understory. Red Bud can be planted in the woods, and on The Brushpile it's planted between rows of trees to break up the rows. Red Bud is sold bare root from the MDC. Red Bud grows as a bush or small tree.

This is Red Buds range.

The #1 browsed species on The Brushpile.... MULBERRY! As I go along there will be pics of browse. Mulberry is a fast growing trees, and wildlife love it. I've watched Turkey jumping up and down to feed on the berries. Squirrels are constantly making the limbs shake and deer stand on their hind legs just to browse Mulberry.

A Mulberry in a wild plum thicket.

There are Red Mulberries and White Mulberries.... some White Mulberries are white and some White Mulberries are red! Then some Mulberries are hybrids that are a cross between a Red Mulberry and a White Mulberry. Adding to the confusion, Mulberries are dioicious, with only the female producing berries.

Deer don't have a preference, but Red Mulberry is native and White Mulberry was introduced to feed Silk Worms in a failed attempt to start a silk industry.

Get the white fruited mulberry from Burnt Ridge?
I had a senior moment when I planted the whites. I do recall that I planted White Mulberry because it was more drought tolerant than red, so I went out of my way to find it. Burnt Ridge sends me catalogues, but I bought Chestnuts from Burnt Ridge a few years ago.
White Mulberry can be propagated from cuttings!
